THIS POST IS FIXED TERM/SECONDMENT FOR 30 MONTHS DUE TO FUNDING.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist to work within the Vale Community Learning Disability Team (CLDT) which supports adults with Learning Disabilities across the Vale of Glamorgan geographical area.

The post will offer the opportunity for interesting and varied work with scope for developing your skills and competencies across different areas. You will need to have excellent communication, engagement, and organizational skills and you will be expected to maintain a high standard of professionalism. The post offers the opportunity to gain invaluable experience of working under the supervision of practitioner psychologists and so is likely to be of interest to a proficient assistant interested in pursuing a career in clinical psychology. We are seeking applicants with previous Assistant Psychologist or similar experience and a strong interest in working with people with learning disabilities.

The post is offered on a fixed term contract from October 2024 and ending March 2027.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will have regular supervision and support to develop their skills in the areas required. Candidates should have excellent communication skills and be competent in the use of IT.

Whilst the post is based within the Vale CLDT, this is a community-based service so the ability to travel efficiently between locations on a regular basis is required. Experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist or similar role is required and having previous experience of working with adults with learning disability will be an advantage.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply

Job responsibilities

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR THE SECONDMENT POSITION, YOU MUST OBTAIN PERMISSION FROM YOUR CURRENT LINE MANAGER PRIOR TO APPLYING FOR THIS POST.

The CLDTs are multi-disciplinary teams which support adults with Learning Disabilities and their families and/or carers to meet a range of specialist health needs.

The role will involve supporting the CLDT Psychologists in their work and will involve a broad range of tasks including assisting with assessments and clinical interventions, undertaking literature searches to help inform clinical practice, developing and preparing resources for delivering psychological interventions, teaching/training, and supporting the team in research, training and service development projects.

Whilst the post is based with the Vale CLDT there will be an expectation that the post holder will also provide some input to the Cardiff CLDT.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Upper second class or higher BPS-approved degree in Psychology (or its equivalent) and eligible for Graduate Basis for Membership of the BPS.


Desirable

  • Further postgraduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.
  • Application of further professional development in interventions specific to mental health (e.g. CBT, ACT, Mindfulness)


Experience

Essential

  • Previous & relatable experience as an Assistant Psychologist.
  • Previous experience of co-facilitating therapeutic groups or psychosocial interventions.Previous
  • Experienced in compiling data, conducting audits and writing reports


Desirable

  • Previous experience of working with people with learning disabilties.
  • Previous experience of delivering training
  • Previous experience of MDT working
  • Experienced in participating in clinical supervision


Aptitude and abilities

Essential

  • Ability to conduct literature searches and summarise findings
  • High level interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills, including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which you may be challenged
  • An ability to communicate sensitive information to clients and colleagues in a way that addresses psychological distress
  • The ability to plan and prioritise own workload
  • Ability to travel within geographical area
  • Able to work with a high level of autonomy
  • Ability to effectively use virtual platforms to communicate with patients and colleagues.
  • An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a health context
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with learning disabilities.


Desirable

  • Knowledge of the use of Positive Behavioural Support with people with learning disabilities
  • Is enthusiastic about a career in Clinical Psychology
  • Evidence of work-life balance and other interests outside of psychological
  • Ability to speak Welsh.
