An exciting opportunity has arisen for the position of Deputy Head of Nutrition & Dietetics within South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. The Nutrition and Dietetics Department has around 60 staff which is a mix of Dietitians, Dietetic Assistant Practitioners and Dietetic Support Workers separated into specialist teams that are lead by Senior Specialist Band 7 Dietitians.

The post holder willwork closely with the Head of Service and Senior Team tooperationally manage the Nutrition & Dietetics service.Theywill provide highly visible line management and leadership acrossboth Sunderland and South Tynesidesites. They will be accessible and approachable to all staff, patients and carers to ensure care is delivered effectively and efficiently to the highest standard, ensuring a positive patient experience.

The successful applicant will act as a role model, upholding and ensuring the Trust values are implemented and monitored. They will contribute to identifying and managing issues of poor performance, risk, and complaintsthrough DATIX reports and attending Clinical Governance meetings.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will take aleadrole in several key areas within the department includingclinical audit and research,as well as oversight into other department meetings and facilitating our student training programme and Dietetic Apprenticeship. Sunderland and South Tyneside have an excellent reputationfor student training and this post will chair the Student Training group as well as being responsiblefor C student training at Sunderland site.

You will lead and implement planning, development, and evaluation of Nutrition & Dietetics services across the two acute sites ensuring that all services are staffed appropriately, and that staff are deployed to meet service demands, and will assist in raising the profile of the Nutrition & Dietetics service. There will be opportunities to attend HR and Finance meetings alongside the Head of Service as well as Directorate Update meetings.

It is envisaged that the post holder will continue 50% clinical within their specialist area. Therefore, the successful candidate will have considerable post graduate experience and knowledge.

This post is subject to satisfactory DBS check at Enhanced level

Nutrition & Dietetics sit under the Therapies Directorate within Clinical Support.

Job responsibilities

  • To be responsible for the operational management of a Trust wide Nutrition & Dietetics service in collaboration with the Nutrition & Dietetics Head of Service (HoS).
  • To provide highly visible line management and leadership to a multi professional team working across sites within the organisation. To be accessible and approachable to all staff, patients and carers to ensure care is delivered effectively and efficiently to the highest standard in a safe and clean environment, ensuring a positive patient experience.
  • To act as a role model, upholding and ensuring the Trust values are implemented and monitored to provide assurance that staff behave in a professional manner.
  • To contribute to identifying and managing issues of poor performance, risk and complaints.
  • Support the development and delivery of a high standard clinical service that hold patients and their cares at the centre.
  • Support the implementation of robust systems and processes to provide the highest quality of service delivery.
  • To support the HoS and DM in the delivery of continuous improvement, cost improvement and efficiencies.
  • To support the HoS and DM in delivery of contractual performance and key national and local performance indicators.
  • Lead clinical audit and research within the service.
  • Be responsible for student placements and potentially providing specialist training to other professionals.

  • To provide professional, clinical and team leadership for all staff within the Nutrition & Dietetics service.
  • To provide speciality specific advice with regards service planning. To be fully aware of service specific issues, gaps, pressures, staffing and opportunities. To support the management team in developing the Nutrition & Dietetic service.
  • To assist in raising the profile of the Nutrition & Dietetics service.
  • To develop the clinical education of specialist staff and take a lead role in the appropriate education and training development needs of staff.
  • To work towards improving quality services including implementing evidence based practice.
  • To maintain professional development through participation in relevant professional training programmes.
  • To be an authorised signatory for the Nutrition & Dietetics service. Supporting the Manager to ensure effective budgetary management.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc Dietetics or PG Diploma in Dietetics.
  • HCPC Registration.
  • ILM qualification (or willingness to complete within 3 months of post)


Desirable

  • Management / Leadership Qualification at postgraduate level
  • Understanding of STSFT culture, strategic direction and NHS priorities.


Experience

  • Experience of team leader level responsibilities.
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary team.
