Are you a Children's Oncology Nurse passionate about delivering high quality, compassionate care to children and families?

Due to development and progression within our team, we are looking for Band 6 Nurses to join us and work across both our inpatient and day care unit.

Oxford Children's Hospital (part of Oxford University Healthcare Trust) is the Primary Treatment Centre (PCT) for children with cancer in the Thames Valley Region. Kamran's Ward comprises a 9 bedded inpatient ward and a busy day care facility. It is supported by our team of Paediatric Oncology Outreach Nurses (POON) who visit local patients in their homes and several Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCU's) throughout the Thames Valley region.

Main duties of the job

Co ordinating both our inpatient and day care units, this will include being responsible for planned admissions and discharges as well as co ordinating emergency and unplanned admissions.

You will also have the responsibility of co ordinating the care of patients being nursed on other wards. This will involve working closely with the bed manager and other specialities within the Children`s Hospital.

Responsible for ensuring the timely ordering, availability and safe administration of SACT across both areas and supporting Junior staff with education and training to become SACT competent.

Supporting both senior and junior colleagues to ensure the safe and effective delivery of care.

Completing appraisals for Band 5 Nurses and supporting appraise to meet objectives and set goals to further develop.

Ensure that the team maintain and develop high standards of nursing care, reflecting the beliefs about professional nursing practice and patient care outlined in the ward values and Trust values.

Develop, maintain and share specialist knowledge of nursing practice relevant to the care of children.

Involve and encourage parents and cares to be actively involved in the caring process.

Effectively communicate information to parents and cares and all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Work effectively as a mentor and role model to others at all times.

Clinical Practice

The post holder will
  • Demonstrate and promote a family centred style of clinical practice.
  • Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care from admission to discharge.
  • Respond calmly to emergency situations, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, and supporting the child, family and other staff as required.
  • Offer supervision and assistance to the Nursing team in providing high quality, evidence-based care.
  • Set and maintain standards of practice, conduct and decision making according to Trust policies and national guidelines.
  • Accurately document and report to other members of the nursing team and multi-disciplinary team information regarding the care given to patients, communicating changes as they occur.
  • Identify and discuss nursing /child needs with team/ ward staff, parents, carers and the multi-disciplinary team. Be able to plan own workload.
  • Adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct at all times and practice within the NMC Scope of Professional practice, maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Adhere to the data protection act.
  • Demonstrate a problem solving approach to effectively execute planning, implementation and evaluation of changes and developments.
  • Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Accountability, Responsibility and Duty of Care and work towards the provision of support and education for junior staff on the implications for practice.
  • Effectively communicate with all patients, visitors and colleagues in order to promote their comfort and wellbeing, demonstrating awareness of barriers to communication and understanding, (e.g. learning disability, different languages).
  • Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times.

Leadership/Management:

The Post holder will:
  • At Ward level ensure daily allocation of workload allows for efficient bed management and safe, effective patient care. Escalate concerns if this is not achievable.
  • Carry the Childrens Hospital bleep regularly to support the smooth running of the wider services within CHOX providing leadership and ensuring safe staffing levels and timely provision of care. Update safe staffing records daily.
  • Lead on ward projects and audits as directed by Ward Sister and CHOX Matron.
  • Be accountable for specific responsibilities around the organisational and administrative work of the ward,
  • Report and investigate untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or drug administration errors as detailed in ward and Trust protocols and procedures. Contribute to Clinical Governance meetings to ensure shared learning from incidents.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of health and safety regulations that apply to staff and patients in the clinical area and compliance with the procedures.
  • Discuss personal and professional development needs during an annual appraisal with Supervisor developing, agreeing and documenting action points in personal development plan.
  • Be responsible for and promote Nursing teams professional development by offering appraisal, clinical supervision and guidance.
  • Ensure that staff present a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and the professionalism of its staff

Education/Training:

The Post holder will:
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and maintain registration and in line with NMC requirements. Meet the requirements of NMC Revalidation three yearly.
  • Be actively involved in,and support the ward education programme and clinical resource groups. Lead on implementation of changes in policy and practice.
  • Complete or be working towards agreed local and Trust competency frameworks.
  • Supervise, mentor, support and educate junior nurses in the clinical practice setting
  • Attend mandatory study days, and others, relevant to their clinical area.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to research based practice and clinical excellence and play an active part in the introduction of research-based change to improve patient centred care.
  • Continue to develop knowledge and competence in the specialty, using all available resources, e.g. local study sessions, competency frameworks, educational packages etc.
  • Act as mentor to students and colleagues participating in orientation programmes, guiding practice, assessing competence, enabling and supporting their learning.

Improving quality and developing practice:

The post holder will:
  • Demonstrate a commitment to evidence based practice and clinical excellence.
  • Using these skills work collegiately to promote innovation and work within the wider nursing team in the provision of an excellent standard of patient care in line with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHNHSFT) values.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 2 years work experience as a Band 5 Nurse in this speciality
  • Demonstrates up to date knowledge and expertise in cancer treatment and side effects
  • Knowledge of the key professional issues and NMC guidelines relating to professional practice
  • Demonstrates understanding of relevant national cancer strategy / policy and how this relates to the service


Desirable

  • Involvement with audits
