Specialist Biomedical Scientist
Department: Blood Sciences - Chemical Pathology
Band 6 - �35,392 to �42,618 per annum (pro-rata)
Hours: 15 per week (shift pattern inclusive of core hours and pro-rata contribution to out of hours working), all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
An opportunity has arisen within this busy Pathology service to join the Chemical Pathology team. You will be part of a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who deliver a high-quality service that is responsive to patient requirements. We are looking for a competent and versatile person with an absolute attention to detail.
Awareness of the requirements for compliance with the ISO15189 standards is a key requirement for this role. We look to continually improve our services for our patients and are therefore looking for staff with the right attitude who will work with us to achieve this.
The laboratory is ISO15189 accredited and is an IBMS training laboratory. This post could also be offered as a developmental role and applications would also be welcomed from experienced band 5, HCPC Biomedical Scientists
Pathology and Blood Sciences have had major investment in new equipment and refurbishment with the implementation of a Beckman Power Express track (2016), running 2x AU5800 Biochemistry analysers and 2x DXI800 Immunoassay analysers 2016).
Main duties of the job
We have also improved our Protein electrophoresis laboratory with the implementation of a Capillarys 2 for the identification and quantitation of specific proteins.
The post holder will be part of a team of Biomedical Scientists delivering a diagnostic service analysing and reporting on blood, urine, faeces and other materials to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and effective resource management within the hospital.
The post holder will undertake their responsibilities within the Chemical Pathology department to meet all required national and Trust standards.

Job responsibilities
To operate in a professional manner in compliance with the professional codes of conduct (IBMS).
To organise daily duties in the provision of a quality service.
To prioritise the individuals specialist workload.
To use experience, knowledge and judgement to make decisions on laboratory results. To interpret complex multifactorial results and take appropriate actions in line with laboratory and National policies and procedures. E.g. Authorisation of results, ordering relevant follow up procedures, adding technical and approved clinically relevant comments, referring results for clinical interpretation or opinion, proactively informing a clinician of clinically significant results.
To perform advanced maintenance and troubleshooting of all instruments within the department, utilising experience and judgement to effect repairs thus maintaining the operational effectiveness of the department.
To perform basic troubleshooting of relevant Blood Gas point of care testing analysers sited outside the department, utilising experience and judgement to effect repairs thus maintaining the operational effectiveness of the devices within the trust.
Perform specialist analysis in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
To undertake technical validation of the results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory quality procedures and protocols.
