We now have a 1 year FTC vacancy for an enthusiastic, highly capable Principal Clinical Scientist to lead the Biochemistry service within the Trust at Sutton. The role will also include occasional support for the Biochemistry laboratory at Chelsea. The post holder will be expected to be involved in all aspects of service delivery including teaching, audit, and clinical liaison.
Applications are invited for a Clinical Scientist with knowledge of the challenges of a busy Biochemistry laboratory. As a member of the departmental team, reporting to the Consultant Clinical Scientist, you will be the clinical lead for the Biochemistry service. You will be expected to work with a small team as well as autonomously deliver a high-quality service working towards UKAS accreditation. The successful candidate will work with a team of three other clinical scientists.
Applicants must have experience of routine biochemistry and proteins Applicants must be HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist, have a higher degree (e.g. MSc) in an area relevant to the discipline and have completed part 1 and be actively working towards full FRC Path, for which support will be provided.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will assist the Consultant Clinical Scientist in providing a comprehensive scientific and clinical advisory service within Blood Sciences and Clinical Biochemistry. The post will perform a broad and demanding range of scientific and managerial work in order to improve working practices in the Blood Sciences laboratories and throughout the hospital. The post holder will act as the clinical lead for the Blood Sciences service at Sutton with occasional support at Chelsea if required.
You will be expected to develop and maintain close working relationships with all grades of staff, both scientific and medical to ensure the effective delivery of the service. The job holder will be expected to work with minimum supervision and to co-ordinate their activities to ensure an efficient service is provided.

- Provide advice to medical, nursing and other staff on the clinical interpretation of biochemistry investigations and the limitations of these investigations. Advise staff how to investigate patients, including the selection of tests, patient preparation, sample collection etc
- To be accountable for the clinical authorisation of patient reports, supplying expert interpretive comments where appropriate, requesting additional tests and liaising with other laboratories providing specialist services.
- To take personal and professional responsibility for advice given and for own decisions and those of more junior staff.
- To ensure that all potentially critical results are communicated to the appropriate carer suggesting appropriate action or further testing where required.

Essential
- First or second class honours degree in relevant subject
- Successful completion of a recognised training programme in clinical biochemistry
- MSc in Clinical Biochemistry or related subject
- HCPC registration (Clinical Scientist)
- Proven Achievement of Part 1 Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) examination
- Appropriate proven knowledge of routine and specialised analytical methods and quality assurance
- Evidence of continuous professional development
