Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Physiotherapist to join our excellent Regional Neurosciences Centre in a Stroke role at University Hospital Southampton. This post is being created with enhanced funding in response to the recent RCP Guidelines, and to support delivery of a planned 24/7 Mechanical Thrombectomy service.

This is a full time opportunity based across the 41 beds encompassing hyper acute stroke, acute stroke and the stroke rehabilitation service. UHS is well supported with a Stroke pathway to optimise flow into the community.

We are looking for a skilled and dynamic physiotherapist to provide senior clinical and operational leadership alongside the current senior therapists within the UHS stroke team and assist with strategic development of the therapy service within neurosciences. The role will also require teaching postgraduate/undergraduate students as well as providing specialist advice to onward care providers.

You will work as part of a combined therapy services team delivering patient care across a 7-day service, including weekends and bank holidays, on a roster basis. Physiotherapy staff may be part of the acute on-call respiratory rota.

This post is part of the wider Therapy services department. You will have many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through our in-service training. You will be part of a large department of over 290wte Therapy staff including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This B7 Physiotherapist role offers you the chance to work in a friendly, supportive MDT environment with a team committed to improving patient care and experience. You will be completing highly specialised assessments, goal-directed treatments and multi-therapy discharge planning. You will be required to liaise closely with local community services, specialist regional units & local DGHs.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about high quality patient centred care within the stroke service, with excellent communication skills and the ability to work flexibly to accommodate the ever changing nature of both acute and rehabilitation environments.

The postholder is responsible for managing a varied and complex caseload as well as supporting and supervising B3-6 staff & students. All our therapy staff are required to be able to undertake flexible working over a 7-day period.

The post holder, once competent, would be expected to work independently at weekends, on twilights and be involved in the trust wide therapy on-call rota.

As a teaching hospital we have a close working relationship with UoS and other local universities and are able to support staff with opportunities to develop/teach students, through lectures/workshops alongside traditional placement experience.

Essential skills for this role: Experience in completing comprehensive and complex neurological assessments Experience working in the acute hospital setting (ideally within acute or hyper-acute stroke units and neurosciences) Previous experience within a variety of acute areas e.g. Orthopaedics, Medicine, Elderly Care, Respiratory

Desirable skills for this role: Experience working in a large multidisciplinary team and communicating effectively. Evidence of leading service developments and facilitating change Evidence of excellent leadership skills Evidence of providing teaching to wider MDT, therapy teams and students Ability to stay calm and make appropriate decisions under pressure, in a fast-paced environment
