Are you a motivated and forward-thinking Occupational Therapist looking to develop specialist skills within an acute in-patient and outpatient therapy team?

An excellent and exciting opportunity has arisen to work within an innovative and dynamic team of therapists within London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. We are looking for enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our expanding hand therapy and orthopaedic service.

This post will predominately be working across hand therapy and orthopaedic wards at Northwick Park Hospital.

The Therapy Department holds a high profile within the Trust and you will be encouraged to develop your clinical, teaching and managerial skills according to the area of work setting and CPD guidelines. Support and supervision will be provided by experienced occupational therapists. Our multidisciplinary Therapies department is committed to development and offers a large range of in-service and external training to suit individual's needs. There are new and exciting projects continually being undertaken which you will be given the opportunity to partake in.

We run 7 days services which you will be expected to work with, which is followed by rest days.

Main duties of the job

This post holder will be an autonomous practitioner, assisting in the coordination and provision of a specialist occupational therapy service to patients within the acute orthopaedics/hand therapy team.

Provide assessment and treatment for patients with a wide range of complex physical, sensory, perceptual and cognitive problems within inpatient, which may include visits to assess the home environment, and also work with outpatient hand therapy patients.

Manage their own caseload working alongside the multi-disciplinary team and other external agencies to ensure specialist treatment plans, including physio, Social Services, specialist nurses etc.

Work collaboratively with patients, family, carers and with colleagues in health and social services to ensure effective service planning, policy and delivery of services to their specific patient group.

Deputise in the absence of the Advanced Occupational Therapist to represent the department at relevant meetings both in and outside the Trust.

Contribute to departmental meetings, and participate in audits and regularly undertake research and CPD activities in specialist area.

Be responsible for maintaining a professional and specialist knowledge base through participation in appraisal and CPD activities and attendance at specialist courses relevant to area of work.

Be responsible for planning and delivering specialist education to other OTs, professionals and patient/carers on aspects of sensory, perceptual, physical.

Education/ qualifications

Essential

  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy State Registration with HPC


Desirable

  • Membership of specialist group in relevant area of work. Attendance at recent post graduate courses relevant to clinical field and evidence of CPD


Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • -Broad knowledge of current best practice in OT -Application of the OT process with designated patient group. -Planning and coordination of treatment programmes -Group work skills -Ability to analyse professional and ethical issues. -Understanding of team dynamics -Knowledge of legislation that affects treatment with patients in area of work -Effective written and oral communication skills. -Report writing skills -Ability to manage own workload and determine priorities -Ability to reflect and appraise own performance -Application of health and safety and risk management policies. -Ability to respond sensitively to the needs of patients -Ability to self-motivate and initiate activity, to be discussed with line manager -Ability to use negotiation and diplomacy skills with patients, staff and families

Skills, abilities and attributes

Essential

  • Experience working as an OT within an acute hospital setting Experience working autonomously with complex patients Able to regularly transfer patients, use equipment such as hoists and slide sheets, and transfer patients into vehicles Ability to work closely with patients and conduct assessments such as self-care. Ability to use advanced physical skills of dexterity, co-ordination and sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients. Ability to work in occasional unpleasant conditions with odours, occasional body fluids and home visits.


Desirable

  • Experience of Audit procedures and Quality measures. Experience and Training in current lifting and handling techniques
