Charles Dickens Day Unit is an 16 Chair Chemotherapy unit delivering excellent care to patients requiring chemotherapy, and supporting patients throughout their cancer journey. Successful applicant would need to be willing to support the expansion to a 6 day service.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic SACT trained nurse who will work as part of the nursing team in supporting the unit manager to run an effective and safe unit. Charles Dickens Unit treats patients throughout their treatment pathway providing individualised, compassionate and informed care.

You should be able to combine autonomy with team working sensitivity and professionalism.

You will be expected to adopt a holistic, pro-active and dynamic approach, being responsible for the delivery of a high standard of care and service to the patients. You will in association with your colleagues be required to support patients and their carers on all aspects of their care, be they newly diagnosed, or being treated with palliative intent.

You must be SACT trained to apply for this position.

Main duties of the job

MTW is an Acute Hospital Trust, which means that it provides a range of general hospital services from surgery and critical care, to emergency care and cancer services. We currently care for approximately 500,000 people in the Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells area. The Trust operates from two primary sites our new state of the art Tunbridge Wells Hospital,

Maidstone Hospital is the home to the Kent Oncology Centre, one of the leading cancer treatment centres in the southeast. The cancer centre treats over 7,000 new patients a year from Kent and East Sussex, and was among the first nationally to benefit from a �4.7 million new treatment system that targets and treats tumours with pinpoint accuracy. The Centre is highly regarded for the excellent care it provides and for its work with major pharmaceutical companies in conducting vital research to support the development of new cancer treatments

Job responsibilities

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trusts 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full-time (please email mtw-tr.professionalstandards@nhs.net if this is problematic)and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at Enhanced Level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children)

Qualifications

Essential

  • First level registered nurse
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Mentorship/teaching
  • SACT competent


Desirable

  • UKONS passport or evidence of working towards


Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Recent experience at band 5 or equivalent in Haematology/Oncology.
  • Proficient clinician and clinical role model
  • Experience of teaching/assessing/ supervising others in a clinical setting.
  • Good understanding of current issues in nursing and the NHS
  • Demonstrates a commitment to professional development
  • Demonstrates excellent understanding of cancer treatments and their side effects / complications


Desirable

  • An understanding of resource management

  • IT/Keyboard skills
  • Commitment to teaching
  • Cannulation, Venepuncture and CVAD competent.
  • Ability to administer prescribed medications including transfusion of blood and blood products.
