We are seeking a Locum Colorectal surgeon at University Hospital of North Durham, for a period of 6 months. You will join a team of 12 colorectal consultants providing for a population of 650,000. Interests in pelvic floor disorder and SNS to complement existing colleagues are essential, however, other additional interests will be supported (cancer/IBD). The position will include emergency on-call at the UHND (1:10). We have two pelvic floor surgeons and have monthly local pelvic floor MDT meeting with urogynaecologist, gastroenterologist, colorectal radiologist and nurse specialists. We also have a regional monthly MDT meeting in Newcastle. Our anorectal physiology lab is Consultant led with the support of a clinical scientist and nurse specialist. The pelvic floor service is also supported by two nurse specialists and a physio who provide a biofeedback and rectal irrigation service. We have an internationally renowned expert in constipation and functional bowel disease with an active functional bowel research department and a linked surgical research fellow post. The successful applicant would have the opportunity to participate and develop a research portfolio.

Main duties of the job

The post advertised is for a Locum Consultant Colorectal Surgeon for a period of 6 months. A special interest in pelvic floor would be advantageous but other interests would be considered if this was complimentary to existing surgical interests.

It is envisaged that it will be increasingly difficult to accommodate all future advances in specialist treatments and interventions at each of our main hospital sites in an NHS dominated by new regimes including Practice Based Commissioning, Choose and Book and Reference Costs.

Taking this into account it is proposed that whilst a successful candidate will spend most of their programmed activities at University Hospital of North Durham in the north of the Trust it is expected that the role would involve programmed activities at other hospitals within the Trust should this be necessary i
