This post will be for a Scrub Practitioner but a requirement to move to Anaesthetics or recovery may be required.

To undertake duties as SCRUB practitioner/nurse within Theatres . Providing sensitive and professional care at all times.

You will: Act as a role model, demonstrate own activities to new/less experience employees. Liaise with the ward and other departments and all members of the multidisciplinary team in the care and treatment of patients. Provide holistic care utilising persuasive, empathic and reassurance skills where necessary from admission to discharge in the department. Assess, plan and implement care of the patient seeking advice when required and taking appropriate action. Work within organisational policies, standard operating procedures and guidelines. Comply with health, safety and security requirements of self and others. Contribute to the development of services and quality improvements. The post holder will ensure they understand their responsibilities with regard to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

Main duties of the job

  • Act at as a skilled Scrub Practitioner to the Surgical team during operating procedures.
  • Carry out relevant safety checks on all necessary equipment for use during the operative procedure. Ensure that they are in good clean, working order. Report any deficiencies in equipment to Deputy/Team Leader.
  • Assist with the preparation of intra-operative medication drugs, fluids and lotions.
  • Ensure that all counts are carried out correctly and that all registers are kept correctly. In accordance with Theatre Code of Practice.
  • Ensure that the appropriate instruments and consumables are readily available for the procedure.
  • Demonstrate safe handling, removal and disposal of swabs, needles, instruments, diathermy and any other equipment necessary in accordance with trust policy and Theatre code of practice.
  • On completion of the procedure ensure appropriate dressings in place and all relevant drains and catheters are secure and patent.
  • Assess and record the patient's skin condition on arrival and departure from theatre. Check the wound site including dressings and drains. Report any abnormalities and take the appropriate action.
  • Carry out a full verbal and written hand-over of the patient to the recovery team, specifically noting postoperative instructions, dressing and drains etc.
  • Provide postoperative recovery care to patients when the recovery department is exceptionally busy.

Experience

  • Must be a qualified practitioner, successfully completing our in-house the competency package
  • Experience working within an operating theatre

  • Understands the concepts of clinical governance
  • Demonstrates knowledge of effective risk management
  • Knowledge of current NHS issues including performance targets and the wider modernisation agenda.
