We are looking for band 6 nurses or mental health practitioners to join our team of Camden Adolescent Intensive Support Service (CAISS) nurses supporting Camden young people aged 11-18 years. We respond to young people having a mental health crisis in the community, who are ready for discharge from inpatient services, or who are presenting risk and need an outreach approach, all with an aim to avoid unnecessary admissions. We work closely with the wider CAMHS teams to support young people into ongoing treatment and build support networks amongst Camden's strong community/voluntary sector, school, social care and other professional colleagues.
Main duties of the job
What do CAISS team do?
My days at CAISS are very varied- no two days are alike.
I might meet a newly-referred young person for an assessment meeting along with another nurse- we work a lot in pairs so young people have connections with a couple of people in the team to ensure cover. Working together also means we can bounce ideas off each other about the care plan and how to engage the young person.
Sometimes young people are still at the hospital when they get referred, and so I might go down to meet them at A& E or in the Paediatric ward. In these meetings I'd explore with them, their family and CAMHS liaison the support that's needed so they can be discharged home. I find these meetings really satisfying, as I have helped lessen anxiety, solve problems and to organise a safety net that will avoid the young person being admitted.
Most days I have an individual meeting with a young person. 1:1 work might focus on relationship building, or building skills for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and problem-solving. You can be very creative with the type of support offered, based on the needs of the young person. I'll often meet young people in the community - we meet at youth centres or even for a coffee.
About us
Why join us?We think the benefits of working in our community CAMHS CAISS team include:
No shift patterns- we work office hours (flexible working can be discussed)
Genuinely interesting work with a broad range of young people and families across Camden
Working cases in pairs, weekly case review meeting & shared office base so lots of collaboration with and support from colleagues
A nurse-led team that understands and values the skills nurses bring to mental health care
Strong training and progression opportunities, with a strong culture of offering professional supervision. There is work ongoing in the Trust to continue to strengthen the nursing discipline and nurses have benefited from applying to CPD funds for specialist training and attending the monthly nursing discipline meetings.
Opportunities to develop supervisory skills, for example by supporting trainee nurses
Close working with the wider CAMHS multi-disciplinary team to enable continuity of care to young people, and exposure to range of CAMHS treatment approaches as a result
Collaboration with other local organisations - we have a brilliant social worker seconded to our team from the council, and a member of our team supervises mentors for a local charity
