Applications are invited for a Band 7 Clinical Scientist in Immunology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The successful applicant will have completed or be undertaking a formal post graduate training programme and have obtained or be on track to obtain HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.

HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who are eligible to obtain HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist via the equivalence route are also invited to apply.

Clinical liaison and advisory duties would be performed under supervision of an experienced practitioner until the post-holder is registered as a Clinical Scientist with HCPC. The department is committed to training, delivering a programme of tutorials and departmental seminars, and providing mentoring opportunities. Appointment would be at Band 6 until HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist is obtained.

We are looking for someone with a passion for laboratory medicine and an ability to provide a progressive and highly patient-focused laboratory service for the healthcare providers and patients we serve. You will join a friendly multidisciplinary team of Clinical Immunologists and Clinical Scientists.

Main duties of the job

The Immunology Laboratory provides an analytical and clinical advisory service to the tertiary and secondary clinical immunology services within LTHT and the wider network within the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT). Around 400,000 samples are processed per year and tests performed include both automated and more specialised assays the development of new assays will be encouraged.

The post holder will have a close working relationship with the principal and consultant clinical scientists within Immunology and Specialist Laboratory Medicine, with the technical service delivery team and with the clinical immunology team. Along with clinical scientist colleagues, they will be a key point of contact for clinical and scientific enquiries into the Immunology Laboratory and will be responsible for training and competency assurance for the clinical validation and reporting of results from the Immunology Laboratory. The post holder will participate in liaison with clinical service users, participation in MDTs and provision of advice and guidance on appropriate use of laboratory tests and laboratory resources.

Experience within the Immunology discipline is essential, as well as good communication skills and an enthusiasm for quality improvement and service development in line with clinical requirements for our patients.

This is an exciting time to work at Leeds soon we will move into the new, purpose-built Centre for Laboratory Medicine on the St Jamess University Hospital site, which will allow our routine and specialist immunology services to be co-located with the regional Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratories.

Qualifications

Essential

  • First Degree in Immunology or Chemistry OR alternative qualifications
  • AND experience externally assessed as being equivalent
  • Masters Degree or PhD in Clinical Immunology OR assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise within speciality of clinical Immunology
  • Registration as a clinical scientist with Health Care Professions
  • Council OR evidence of near-completion of STP programme / equivalence portfolio

  • Relevant PhD


Experience

Essential

  • To have completed a formal post graduate training programme approved as appropriate for registration together with supervised in service experience totalling 3 years
  • OR to have undertaken alternative training and supervised in service experience totalling 6 years as appropriate for registration
  • To have a thorough knowledge of human Immunology and chemistry, including metabolic processes, physiology and pharmacology.
  • To have a good knowledge of analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving.
  • To have developed analytical (technical) skills in general areas.
  • Able to advise medical and nursing staff on investigations and interpretations of biochemical and metabolic processes (where necessary with back up from more senior staff)
  • Able to use and manipulate lab computer system and standard software packages
  • Able to provide leadership to a small team within the department as delegated.
  • Able to recognise patterns of abnormality and relate them to clinical situations and assess differential diagnoses.
  • Able to prepare and present scientific and clinical information at meetings or as part of a teaching commitment.
  • Able to conduct Research and Development Activities.
