The Research Associate is an autonomous practitioner working within the multi-disciplinary research team. The main duties are to conduct research and contribute to the overall research performance of the NHNN and ION, carrying out activities leading to the publishing of work in high-quality journals. This role is to pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.

The post holder will take responsibility for the co-ordination and data collection for studies in Non-dystrophic myotonia (NDM) and Myotonic dystrophy (DM1). They will have their time equally split between the muscle channelopathy service and the myotonic dystrophy clinic.Responsibilities will include collecting data from patients with myotonic disorders, organising sessions, and supporting them throughout.

The post holder will have strong research organisational skills and knowledge relating to the conduct of clinical trials, the interventions and the relevant diseases. They will be expected to have excellent research method skills.

This post will be based within the specialist neuromuscular service at the Queen Square MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases (CNMD).

Main duties of the job

o Continuing recruitment for research and overseeing the regular assessment of these patientso Designing and implementing systems and processes for the practical delivery of studieso Reviewing and synthesising existing research literature within fieldo Organising, facilitating and synthesising the outputs of co-production activitieso Conducting research and contributing to the overall research performance of the CNMD by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in academic journals and conferenceso Developing research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposalso Engaging effectively with industrial, commercial and public-sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the CNMD's profile, cultivating strategically valuable alliances, and pursuing opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities.o Providing advice and support to participants in research studies and be identifiable as a point of contacto Promoting effective communication with study participants regarding study protocols, participant information sheets and consenting procedures and abiding by GCP research practiceo Disseminating study data, research outcomes and specialist knowledge via poster presentations, written publication and other media as appropriate at conferences

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

• Pre-registration degree as an Allied Health Professional
• Registered Allied Health Professional (AHC)
• Evidence of attendance at meetings, courses and conferences (e.g. within speciality CPD, research presentations)
• Doctoral level degree or close to completion of doctoral studies

Experience

Essential

• Broad post-graduate experience at appointment, of which 6 months is specific neurosciences post graduate experience
• Strong research organisational skills
• Research experience: recruitment, evidence synthesis, quantitative methods
• Proven experience and competence in assessing and treating a variety of neuromuscular patients
• Previous experience in audit and evaluation

Desirable

• Experience of organising stakeholder activities
• Experience of formal/ informal teaching of patients and staff
• Experience working as a preceptor/facilitator
• Knowledge of Trust research governance issues
