We are looking for an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our friendly Respiratory, Surgical and Critical Care Therapy Team. Our team comprises of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Apprentices and Therapy Assistants.

As a team we cover the medical, surgical and critical care wards at Dorset County Hospital, deliver a follow-up critical care service and work closely with our colleagues in Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Respiratory Out-patients.

Dorset County Hospital is currently going through development of the Emergency Department and Critical Care Unit with increased bed capacity. To support this expansion our workforce also needs to expand to continue the quality service we provide to our adult critical care population during their stay on critical care and in their recovery period onto the wards and on discharge from hospital.

We promote education and service development and use our connections with Bournemouth University, AECC University College, Thames Valley and Wessex Critical Care Network and surrounding Trusts to ensure we are delivering the best care and service to our population.

Main duties of the job

The therapist works as an integral member of the Occupational Therapy team

To undertake all aspects of clinical duties and to carry a significant caseload of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with complex presentations

To work at an advanced level and be professionally and legally accountable for a specialised patient caseload, and decide priorities for own work area, without direct supervision.

In conjunction with the Team Lead, the post holder participates in a rolling programme of education, clinical evaluation, audit and research across the speciality.

To promote and demonstrate safe, timely and appropriate discharge planning.

To provide leadership and clinical guidance for junior staff, therapy assistants, students and ward staff.

To take part in weekend working rotas

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree Occupational Therapy
  • Registered as a Occupational Therapist with HCPC
  • Undertaken a range of relevant postgraduate courses
  • Undertaken clinical educators training


Desirable

  • BAOT Member
  • Undertaken appropriate managerial/leadership training
  • Member of Special Interest Group


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Wide ranging rotational occupational therapy experience at band 5 level including experience in an acute setting
  • Experience of participating in audit and evidence based projects.
  • Evidence of actively participating in in-service training and MDT groups, and evaluating effectiveness of training
  • Experience and ability to work collaboratively within MDT
  • Experience of supporting junior colleagues
  • Knowledge of national guidelines and standards relevant to Critical Care and Respiratory Therapy
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its implication for Occupational Therapy
  • Self-motivated with a clear vision of the role
  • Physically fit and able to comply with Trusts moving and handling guidelines, therapeutic handling
  • Available for weekend duties and altered working patterns where clinically appropriate
  • Car driver / owner
  • Knowledge of occupational developments and evidenced based practice pertaining to Critical Care and respiratory patients


Desirable

  • Previous experience at band 6 level
  • Experience in managing limited resources and high workloads
  • Experience of supervision and appraisal of therapy staff and students with ability to give constructive feedback

  • The ability to discuss clinical reasoning in the management of complex cases
  • The ability to identify and act upon adverse clinical signs
  • Able to communicate complex information to patients, carers other health professionals and team.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to organise prioritise and delegate.
  • Ability to self-direct learning, be critical and evaluate own learning needs, demonstrated in a CPD portfolio.
  • Able to provide a high standard of clear concise, written and verbal reports in English
  • Good teaching and presentation skills
  • IT skills, including using hospital data bases, word processing, excel, email and power point
  • Ability to manage own stress and work in a stressful and unpredictable environment.
  • To show empathy and fairness to give support to others
  • Work in a flexible manner and adapt to changing environments


Desirable

  • IT skills - Ability to create and/or format data and/or complex spreadsheets using computerised systems
  • Demonstrates excellent leadership ability and motivational skills
