We are currently recruiting for an exciting CAMHS Staff Nurse (RCN, RMN, RNLD) role based at Collingham Child and Family Centre, a National 7 day inpatient setting working in partnership with Chelsea Hospital Schools, for children aged 5 - 13 years olds. We also welcome applicants for staff nurse posts in our Lavender walk service, as we can offer rotations to further your depth of knowledge and experience.


The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings

Main duties of the job

We have included an account from one of our current team, sharing their story WhenI first was introduced to Collingham as a student nurse almost 3 years ago and loved it so much that I kept coming back for bank shifts as a band 3 support worker. I felt part of the family and fully involved and when I qualified as an RMN I became a permanent band 5 staff nurse on the unit. From there I've progressed onto becoming a band 6 Clinical Team Leader. And it hasn't stopped there! I've continued to develop and grow within Collingham and the CNWL CAMHS family and have had opportunities to act up into a band 7 managerial role for a few weeks as I continue my career progression path

The team provides intensive assessment and treatment for children with complex emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties, offering intensive work with families/parents and carers to develop their parenting skills.

Our highly experienced and dedicated multidisciplinary team is committed to offering the highest standards of care to help children and families regain their self-confidence. Adopting a solution focused approach for hard to manage problems and steer a course towards optimism, newly realised potential and a positive future for the child and their family network.

Protected training time-working in CAMHS is a specialist and demanding area. We know you will need to develop skills and abilities as part of your professional development which is why we have a weekly teaching session, weekly reflective practice and access to training opportunities such as positive behaviour support (PBS), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Protected Supervision- We ensure that all our staff have clinical supervision for a minimum of 1 hour protected time every month

Job Purpose

To deliver high standards of CAMHS nursing in partnership with child, young person and their family/ carers.Key Results

The child and family will receive high standards of evidence-based care in a safe and professional environment. Family centred care is promoted by working in partnership with the child and family. Junior staff will be supported in order to develop professional, clinical and communication skills. Professional development will support NMC and PREPP requirements. Trust Policies and Procedures will be adhered to. Critical ActivitiesNursing Care To take responsibility for and manage the overall care of the unit within a span of duty and act as nurse in charge, delegating as appropriate and ensuring completion of all nursing duties. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care in relation to the physical, psychological, emotional, social, occupational and spiritual needs of children and young people with mental health problems and their families, in accordance with the nursing process. To demonstrate knowledge and skills in mental health; mental disorder and mental health nursing. To demonstrate good skills and knowledge of any necessary equipment and therapeutic interventions. To contribute to the effective utilisation of equipment and resources. To ensure that all Trust and departmental policies and procedures are adhered to at all times. To supervise junior staff and students to ensure the delivery of safe and effective care. To demonstrate a good knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Childrens Act, Mental Capacity Act and any other relevant legal information pertaining to this field of practice. To demonstrate a good knowledge of child development. Communication To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-professional team to co-ordinate all aspects of family centred care. To work in partnership with children and their families and other health care professionals. To communicate effectively, verbally, non-verbally and via formal documentation with children, families and the multi-professional team. To develop effective Therapeutic Relationships with the child and their families respecting appropriate boundaries. To encourage and facilitate an effective communication network by attendance at staff meetings and accessing all available information sources within the department. Education and Training To utilise professional development opportunities provided by the Trust in order to achieve roles within the Scope of Professional Practice. To provide mentorship, guidance and supervised practice for junior staff and student nurses, and to instigate learning opportunities for these groups within the CAMHS environment. To identify personal and professional development needs of junior staff. To attend formal and informal update sessions within Tertiary Services, and keep updated in developments in clinical practice. To take responsibility for own personal and professional development. To take full responsibility for maintaining mandatory training requirements.

Professional To act as a positive role model at all times to staff and young people. To instigate the correct action in the event of critical incidents and complaints, ensuring that the process is communicated appropriately. To participate in support group activities, and the performance management process. To ensure that appropriate support and guidance is accessed via regular clinical supervision, group supervision/support and through line management structure. To participate in identified projects and key initiatives as identified by the Ward Manager or Lead Nurses.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Registered Nurse at degree / diploma level
  • RNC at degree or diploma level
  • RNLD at degree of diploma level
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Degree level qualification
Experience Essential
  • Knowledge of mental disorder, child development, mental health law and legislation and the nursing process
  • Experience of working in a mental health setting post- registration
  • Basic counselling skills
Special Aptitudes/Abilities Essential
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and empathy to the needs of children & young people
  • Ability to effectively communicate with children, young people and their parents
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other professionals, in person and on the phone
  • Ability to understand and work with challenging behaviour
