As a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist, you will be trained in all areas of the Clinical Biochemistry Automated Laboratory.

The department is housed in a modern, purpose-built laboratory and the successful candidate will be joining a busy, friendly team. We currently have Beckman general chemistry and immunoassay analysers in our Automated Laboratory linked to a DxA track.

The Blood Sciences laboratories have accreditation by UKAS under ISO 15189. We are approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for both the registration portfolio, leading to HCPC registration and specialist portfolios.

Severn Pathology's aim is to provide a best in class, high quality, innovative, value for money pathology service that serves the needs of the healthcare market in the South West region. The laboratory facilities accommodate all pathology disciplines including the Blood Sciences, Bristol Genetics Laboratory, a single Bristol Cellular Pathology Service and a combined Microbiology and Health Protection Agency service within one facility.

Main duties of the job

The post holder under the direction of senior staff will be expected to:

Work as part of a team to provide a diagnostic laboratory service in Clinical Biochemistry in accordance with National, Trust and Departmental policies and procedures in the Automated Laboratory.Participate in the training and development of other staff within the departmentParticipate fully in the department's 24/7 rota system.Contribute to the development of services provided to meet the requirements of users.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Working in accordance with the Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and assist in the development and review of these as required.
  • Receiving and analysing samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
  • Assisting in the interpretation and technical validation of the analyses in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Responsible for the provision of our service to patients in routine and emergency situations.
  • Rotating into any area of the Automation as required.
  • Participating fully in the departments 24/7 rota service.
  • Prioritising the completion of urgent requests.
  • Telephoning important results to an appropriate person when necessary
  • Responsible for their own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff
  • Validating and releasing results to service users as required
  • Maintaining a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate
  • Preparing and ensuring adequate supplies of reagents and consumables
  • Using consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies
  • Performing the routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment with which she/he is working including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions
  • Processing internal and external quality control samples as required
  • Participating in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual
  • Participating in risk management of the department including the reporting of adverse incidents
  • Assisting in research and development projects as required
  • Assisting in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLAs, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required
  • Participating in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures
  • Undertaking continued professional development
  • Personally responsible for maintaining HCPC Registration
  • Participating in all other activities in the section to enable the department to maintain compliance with ISO15189.

    Desirable

    • Beckman AU 5800, DxI and DxA experience


    24/7 shift experience

    • Experience of 24/7 shift working
