We are seeking an enthusiastic clinical scientist to join our department in providing a high quality clinical biochemistry service. Our department is based at Bristol Royal Infirmary situated in the City Centre and comprises of an integrated blood sciences automated laboratory with Immunochemistry and Metabolic, Neuroendocrine and Nutrition specialist sections. We provide a wide range of biochemical services for our Trust and primary care as well as a regional and national service to external users for specialist assays.
The successful candidate will participate in the Duty Biochemist rota for the interpretation and reporting of routine clinical biochemistry results in both adults and paediatrics. They will also support provision of the department's specialist paediatric and metabolic biochemistry service by participation in the Duty Paediatric Biochemist rota under the supervision of the clinical lead and their deputy. In this role they will also gain experience in specialist paediatric biochemistry and metabolic biochemistry supporting the clinical teams at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and the South West Paediatric Metabolic Team by attending MDTs, ward rounds and clinics.
Applications are welcome from pre-registration trainees in their final year of STP training. The post offers excellent training and career development opportunities and you will be a key member of the clinical biochemistry team. Full support for completion of FRCPath will be provided.

Main duties of the job
- Full participation in the general Duty Biochemist Rota
- Participation under supervision in the Duty Paediatric and Metabolic Biochemists Rota
- Develop subspecialist knowledge in analytical techniques, interpretation and reporting of investigations for adult and paediatric metabolic disease
- To attend MDTs, clinics and ward rounds as required
- To participate in service improvement activities
- To attend and contribute to laboratory management and clinical governance meetings
- To participate in EQA review of laboratory assays and assist in troubleshooting issue as they arise
- To undertake audit and research activities
- To assist the quality management team with maintenance of UKAS accreditation
- To participate in CPD and work towards completion of FRCPath
- To contribute to training of MLA, BMS, clinical scientist and medical staff

Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Wide-ranging practical experience in manual and automated techniques of analytical biochemistry including high-performance liquid chromatography, spectrophotometry, electrophoresis and immunoassay
- Experience in the interpretation of clinical biochemistry results in both adults and paediatrics
- Experience of audit, research and development, demonstrated by completion of a dissertation as part of an under- or post-graduate degree, 'in-house' written reports and/or presentations at scientific meetings.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures as they affect the handling of potentially hazardous chemicals and biological samples in the laboratory.

- Specialist expertise in clinical and analytical biochemistry obtained by an extensive training programme involving at least three years in-service experience
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing complex scientific information with both specialist and non-specialist staff this includes skills to provide and receive complex data where some degree of analytical discussion and/or negotiation may be required.
- Ability to evaluate complex biochemical information in all aspects of clinical biochemistry, including statistical analysis of External Quality Assurance data.
- Ability to perform accurately complex manual and automated analytical techniques including high-performance liquid chromatography, electrophoresis and immunoassay, involves highly developed physical skills requiring hand-eye co-ordination and accuracy when pipetting samples and weighing small volumes of potentially hazardous chemicals
- Ability to understand and perform to a high standard clinical and analytical tasks delegated by supervising Senior staff according to the needs of the department.
- Ability to concentrate frequently on complex biochemical data, often amid regular interruptions for advice by laboratory and clinical staff.
- Computer skills including use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet and literature search programmes
