Barts Cancer Centre has an international reputation as a service dedicated to treating patients with both common and rarer cancers. We provide an integrated service to over one and a half million people in north east London, Essex and beyond, ensuring they have access to high quality, specialist cancer care.

The Radiotherapy service is based at St Bartholomew's Hospital, a leading, internationally renowned teaching hospital situated within the City of London. The department offers an opportunity to work within a dynamic organisation using and developing the latest techniques and technologies.

Treatment equipment comprises five Varian TrueBeam linacs (2 with 6DoF couch), XStrahl orthovoltage unit and Gammamed HDR on the ARIA network complete the equipment portfolio.

Pre-treatment imaging is provided with a Siemens Somatom Confidence CT and planning with Varian Eclipse treatment planning system. Techniques include IMRT, IGRT, TBI, DIBH and gynaecological brachytherapy as well as stereotactic radiosurgery with HyperArc, SABR and ART.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited for Band 6 Senior Therapeutic Radiographers to be part of the Barts team and is a rotational post covering all areas of the departments including pre-treatment, treatment units and brachytherapy working in pre-treatment imaging as well as treatment delivery.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC registration as a Therapeutic Radiographer
  • BSc (Hons) in Therapy Radiography
  • Awareness of HCPC standards of conduct


Desirable

  • Evidence of post graduate study
  • Clinical updates


Experience

Essential

  • Post registration experience of working in a Radiotherapy department on the treatment units and pretreatment.
  • Experience of complex techniques Competent in standard simple techniques and able to accept IR(ME)R responsibility
  • Experience with IGRT
  • Experience of record and verification systems, data downloads, data entries, data checks
  • Experience of communicating with anxious and stressed patients and relatives regarding treatment issues


Desirable

  • Previous senior experience.
  • Undertaken some sort of presentation since university, e.g. training or update presentation to colleagues
  • Aria/Varian equipment experience.
  • Experience of advanced techniques e.g. SABR, SRS, DIBH, TBI etc
  • Ability to critically evaluate CBCT images.


Knowledge

Essential

  • Understand the optimisation of patient treatments
  • Core knowledge of a range of radiotherapy equipment and techniques together with the principles underlying them. Understanding of Ionising Radiation Regulations and responsibilities relating to own professional practice
  • Knowledge of departmental and Trust values and behaviours


Desirable

  • Knowledge of research and trials.
  • Awareness of governance and its importance in maintaining safe practice.


Skills

Essential

  • Able to concentrate and keep focused with interruptions from other staff, patients and relatives
  • Good spatial and hand eye coordination as required to manoeuvre machinery, patient and equipment avoiding collision and resulting in proper alignment
  • Ability to work well within and lead a team when required.
  • Ability to remain calm in a potentially stressful environment
  • Self motivated


Other

Essential

  • Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with colleagues and patients in an informed and professional way using appropriate language.


Desirable

  • Supervision and guidance of other Radiographers, undergraduate students, multidisciplinary visitors, within area of work or responsibility
