The 8a Clinical Specialist in Spinal Physiotherapy will be a clinical expert in Out-patient spinal diagnosis and rehabilitation and will be based at Queens Medical Centre Physiotherapy department, Leengate. They will be responsible for delivering conservative care for those on the regional Scoliosis pathway and will be an expert in the conservative management of this condition. They will possess specialist training in the Schroth approach or equivalent. They will have national links for influencing and developing expertise in this specialism.

They will also be the lead for the service quality and safety of Spinal physiotherapy rehabilitation across all NUH campuses and this will be achieved by collaborating closely with the NUH Spinal Team in the Surgery Division so that physiotherapy provision meets the conservative, pre-operative and post-operative needs of the Unit and its patients.

Main duties of the job

The Spinal Clinical Specialist will be responsible for planning and implementing physiotherapy recommendations from GIRFT, NICE and local spinal networks and they will work with regional teams to influence recommended standards and guidelines. They will disseminate spinal outcomes, audits and service evaluations on a regional and national level and will work with teams to promote spinal research in the Trust.

Education will be a key pillar of practice and will involve engagement of local and regional providers. This will allow care closer to home for some patients travelling in for secondary or tertiary spinal referrals. The post holder will use innovative ways to support regional physiotherapist's upskilling in scoliosis management and spinal pain e.g. video consultation or centre visits.

As an autonomous clinical specialist physiotherapist, you will be responsible for ensuring safe practice through development of a caseload management plan and to identify treatment priorities in a variety of situations. You will provide expertise and input into the strategic planning and implementation of multidisciplinary clinical guidelines, care pathways and protocols within the trust, in line with national and regional guidance within specialist areas of practice.

To provide clinical leadership within the specialist service, through consultation and joint working with all bands of staff, in the management of complex patients, this will involve review of their clinical reasoning, physiotherapy assessment and treatment plans.

To maintain and develop high standards of patients care and facilitate and implement evidence based practice by ensuring implementation of standards set in relevant national guidance, specialist clinical group guidance and specialist relevant areas. Also by ensuring staff are informed of recent developments through attendance at research based conferences, relevant network meetings and postgraduate education and training courses.

To develop local pathways of care for specialist area patients

To evaluate the effectiveness of the service through service evaluation & clinical audit in liaison with the Therapy Services Manager and relevant stakeholders.

Where appropriate, offer extended scopes of practice so as to facilitate the optimal management of patients within a clinical setting.

To ensure waiting list targets are maintained by initiating and developing new ways of working (e.g. telephone consultation, opt-in appointments, SOS appointments).

To ensure high standards of clinical care on issues pertaining to specialist area, to own team and a wide range of disciplines (e.g. medical staff and the MDT) in line with the education and training strategy by:

Person Specification

Training and qualifications

Essential

  • oBSc Hons in Physiotherapy
  • oFull HCPC registration
  • oRecognised post-graduate training relevant to specialty preferably including research skills to a Master's level
  • oEvidence of maintaining professional competence through CPD
  • oKnowledge of National, Trust and Departmental policies, procedures and guidelines


Experience

Essential

  • oRequire highly advanced / theoretical / practical knowledge and clinical reasoning skills for more than one area of physiotherapy
  • oExperience of working in a consultant clinic


Desirable

  • oExperience of supporting patients with exercise and activity management


Communication and relationship skills

Essential

  • Able to communicate highly complex information
  • Able to utilise persuasion, negotiation and reassurance skills to ensure agreement and co-operation
  • Able to communicate effectively establishing and maintaining relationships
  • Able to motivate, provide constructive feedback, teach and train physiotherapists and members of the MDT
  • Able to influence consultants, commissioners and the wider ICS system


Analytical and Judgement skills

  • oAbility to analyse, interpret and compare information recognising the clinical need for referring for investigation, or refer back to the consultant

  • oAbility to critically appraise research literature and together with the team, implement evidence based practice in order to deliver an effective service.
