The successful candidate will have proven clinical leadership skills and experience across services in the acute setting, including the emergency care pathway, respiratory failure, acute non-invasive ventilation and tracheostomy care. They will lead the Respiratory services and hold a complex clinical caseload in the field of lung disease and respiratory conditions commensurate with grade. Demonstrating compassionate and inclusive leadership skills, they will be operationally responsible for a team of 70, across a range of inpatient and outpatient services serving the local community and South East Region of England.

Applicants should have a proven record as an expert clinician and clinical leader with demonstrable research and education experience, alongside experience in implementing change and innovation in clinical practice.

Part-time and flexible working will be considered and the successful candidate will be encouraged and supported to undertake a suitable accredited senior leadership apprenticeship.

Main duties of the job

To lead the operation, governance and development of respiratory physiotherapy services across the organisation. They will drive quality improvement informed by local and national strategy and the development of a creative, resilient and productive workforce.

To work closely in partnership with the Senior Consultant Physiotherapist, they will inform the development of respiratory physiotherapy strategy and support the development of knowledge and an inquiring culture and research activity.

To take alead role in the KHP Cardiovascular Partnership Programme, strengthening the profile of physiotherapy to support achievement of the programme vision.

Job responsibilities

• To lead the delivery, monitoring and evaluation of high quality, safe, effective and efficient care across a comprehensive range of lung and cardiothoracic services.
• To work in partnership within the organisation, with the Senior Consultant Physiotherapist and across the broader system
• To foster and take innovative approaches to the development of respiratory physiotherapy service delivery amongst multiple teams locally and regionally.
• To work in partnership with the Senior Consultant Physiotherapist to evolve respiratory physiotherapy services to meet local, regional and national requirements and priorities.
• To be a specialist, expert practitioner in physiotherapy provision to patients with cardiorespiratory conditions, working with an advanced level of professional autonomy, accountability and scope of practice in the provision of clinical care for rehabilitation and management of chronic cardiorespiratory conditions.
• To be an expert consultant in specialist area(s) of respiratory physiotherapy practice across the organisation influencing and shaping new models of care and innovation in practice.
• To have a leading role in the development of quality improvement and research in area of clinical practice and / or service areas across the organisation
• To lead, develop and support staff within the respiratory physiotherapy services, clinically and professionally at a local level and to advise nationally.
• To work in collaboration with academic institutions to help determine and define education, training, research and practice development requirements in an area of practice and / or across a range of respiratory physiotherapy services.

Person Specification

Qualifications/ Education

Essential

• First degree in physiotherapy and HCPC registration
• Evidence of expert clinical and professional development and training in respiratory physiotherapy practice
• Recognised post-graduate study at M-level (e.g. MSc)

Desirable

• Member of relevant multi professional interest group
• PhD or equivalent level of knowledge/expertise in field evidenced by post graduate clinical academic profile

Previous experience

Essential

• Experience of leading patient consultations, diagnostics and management plans as lead clinician within an multi-disciplinary team
• Proven leadership and evidence of team management and supervision
• Significant experience of service development/re-modelling/transformation
• Experience of clinical education, teaching and training undergraduate and post-graduate students across professions.
• A proven track record and demonstrable research/QI experience, knowledge and skills

Desirable

• Previous experience at Clinical Lead or Consultant level
• Significant experience of lecturing in national and international arenas to multi-professional groups
• Evidence of submission of competitive grant applications

Skills/Knowledge/ Ability

Essential

• Expert theoretical and practical knowledge of a wide range of approaches to the management of patients with a sub-speciality of respiratory conditions acquired through extensive experience as an autonomous clinical expert
• Able to demonstrate leadership ability with multi-professional teams
• Able to communicate intelligently and with clarity in written and spoken English in a variety of settings using a variety of media
• Ability to manage change and contain conflict ensuring resolution with positive outcomes
• Demonstrates understanding of impact of current government and regional policy developments including a robust understanding of all aspects of Clinical Governance including previous experience of quality issues, audit and risk management
