The perfusion team at Hammersmith Hospital are seeking to recruit for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join their friendly and committed team as Bank Perfusionist. Applications are invited from accredited perfusionists registered with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland, with experience of adult perfusion practice including minimally invasive surgery, cell salvage, intra-aortic balloon therapy (IABP) and VA-ECMO. As a Bank Perfusionist, working on the bank is on an ad hoc basis to fill service needs and your availability

Main duties of the job

To comply with the Code and Standards of Practice as defined by the Society of Clinical Perfusionists of Great Britain and Ireland.

High level of competence in performing a broad range of routine adult clinical perfusion techniques and procedures.

Maintain good working relationships with members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Job responsibilities

1. Job Purpose:

Contribute to the provision of a clinical perfusion service for the Trust, incorporating a primary responsibility to the Hammersmith Hospital and a peripatetic clinical service to the Trust in general. This will include cardiopulmonary bypass, cell salvage and intra-aortic balloon pump systems.

  • High level of competence in performing a broad range of routine adult clinical perfusion techniques and procedures.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of standards and quality in perfusion services.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call perfusion service within the Trust.

4. General responsibilities

Clinical Practice
  • To comply with the Code and Standards of Practice as defined by the Society of Clinical Perfusionists of Great Britain and Ireland.
  • To take, with appropriate delegation, responsibility for the delivery of a highly specialised perfusion service across the Trust including cardiopulmonary bypass, intra-aortic balloon pump and cell salvage procedures, with an adaptable approach to ensure a flexible and effective service is maintained.
  • To demonstrate specialist skills, knowledge and expertise in both Adult clinical practice. Applying these skills to the supervision and training of others throughout the department and the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Draw on knowledge of a range of theories to inform practice. Assist in developing strategies for the management and delivery of care for the client group.
  • Setting up, priming and running bypass equipment for Adult cardiac surgery procedures, according to the perfusion procedures and protocols and to play a full role in the routine cardiac surgical programme.
  • Ensure quality control, calibration and maintenance of expensive and complex medical equipment, ensuring accurate and safe use during clinical procedures.
  • Assess the patient for relevant medical history, pathology and diagnosis and make appropriate clinical decisions concerning the conduct for a range of Cardiac procedures including Adult and complex congenital.
  • To administer drugs, according to local policy and as necessitated by the clinical situation i.e. priming solutions, anticoagulants, inhalational anaesthetic agents, potassium, and cardioplegic solution
  • Participate in the on-call rota to provide 24/7 perfusion cover within the Trust including trauma at St Marys Hospital in order to meet demand.
  • Be fully conversant with specialist techniques and perfusion procedures as required by individual patients such as, cerebral perfusion, vacuum assisted venous drainage, IABP and blood conservation techniques.
  • Ensure that the perfusion department is able to assist in the insertion and management of intra-aortic balloon pumps as required by individual patients throughout the Trust.
  • Encourage, implement and take a full role in departmental and individual projects, with a commitment to research based clinical practice.
  • Contribute to evidence-based clinical practice to maximise clinical effectiveness.
  • Liaise with other members of the Perfusion Team/Service Manager and medical staff agreeing workload for the unit in order to meet contractual requirements advising of problems in advance.
  • Initiate and contribute to the development of and implementation of protocols and procedures as relating to perfusionist duties, developing and reviewing documentation, according to the policies and practice committees.
  • Participate in ensuring quality control, calibration and maintenance is in place for the relevant specialist perfusion/blood management equipment and intra-aortic balloon pumps.
  • Maintain accurate perfusion records during clinical activity.
  • During the operative procedure exercise extreme vigilance of the patients haemodynamic status with accurate and appropriate interpretation of the wide range of data outputs. On assessment of these throughout the procedure, respond to changes and deliver concise accurate information to the surgical and anaesthetic team
  • Keep up-to-date with developments within perfusion, undertaking additional training as appropriate.

Quality and Service Development
  • Be proactive in the updating and development of departmental Standard Operating Procedures taking into account current evidence and clinical governance to optimise clinical outcomes.
  • Contribute to projects for perfusion-related service development within the context of multidisciplinary team settings and service delivery plans.
  • Participate in ensuring adequate policies are in place to protect the patient from risk, for example, by helping prevent the spread of infection.
  • Contribute to effective communication systems that are established throughout the Directorate and across the Trust, ensuring that all communication is relevant and appropriate.

Policies / Service Development / Implementation
  • Deliver, with appropriate delegation, perfusion team objectives and projects to ensure a seamless delivery of service across both clinical sites.
  • To negotiate with others around service issues and caseload management.
  • To facilitate investigation into complaints, accidents / incidents made in respect of the Perfusion Department, feeding back to the Chief Perfusionist
  • To facilitate the management of specific clinical issues and ensure appropriate communication pathways are developed and evaluated across the service.
  • To support staff to implement team objectives and projects.
  • To contribute to, develop and monitor that protocols are in place for each specified area of the clinical perfusion service.
  • To advise perfusion manager on issues of service delivery including shortfall, service pressures and activity.
  • To assume delegated tasks as requested by line manager, including leading on policy development within area of clinical expertise.
  • To support the development of specialised care protocols relating to a range of issues to improve patient care e.g. blood conservation techniques employed within the Trust.

Financial and Equipment Resources
  • Participate with the procurement of perfusion requirements ensuring adequate equipment is available when required and ensuring that budgetary responsibilities of the service are managed to avoid adverse financial situations.
  • To support a perfusion equipment profile, ensuring that all equipment is in safe working order and regularly maintained with adequate records of work undertaken. Appropriate action should be instigated where equipment is found to be faulty.
  • Avoid waste, identify cost pressures and opportunities for saving to help ensure service provision is within the allocated budget.

Information Resources
  • Accurately collect clinical data using appropriate software.
  • Contribute to the maintenance, development and review of appropriate activity records and information for audit, finance, equipment and performance management, professional registration and benchmarking purposes.
  • Support the Chief Perfusionist in monitoring appropriate data for service benefit, identifying trends and making recommendations.
  • To maintain up to date and accurate patient case notes in line with Society of Perfusionists of Great Britain and Ireland and professional standards and local Trust policies.

Audit and Research
  • The post holder is expected to participate in the Trusts clinical effectiveness activities, and to maintain and foster improvements in the quality and standards of clinical services.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Perfusionist, assist the Directorate team to meet clinical governance targets and contribute to reporting processes.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of research opportunities relating to the practice of perfusion support and contribute to the Imperial College academic and service development programmes.
  • To participate in research activities and help determine suitable methodology for research or service development projects.
  • Ensure that completed research is presented to the wider perfusion community.

Essential

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Perfusion Science or equivalent
  • Basic Accreditation with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland
  • Active Registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland


Desirable

  • Advanced Accreditation with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland
  • MSc in Perfusion Science


Experience

Essential

  • Experience with a range of adult perfusion techniques and with using perfusion equipment and devices
  • Experience in minimally invasive valve surgery
  • Competent in point-of-care testing including TEG


Desirable

  • Experience in minimally invasive extracorporeal circulation (MiECC) systems
  • Experience in VA-ECMO
