An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic full time Specialist Occupational Therapist to join our team working with people with working with clients with a range of mental health diagnosis such as depression, anxiety, bi polar and schizophrenia. In an inpatient setting.

This is a great development opportunity for both experienced band 5 staff who want to experience added responsibility, and existing band 6 staff who wish to broaden their knowledge further in an alternate service area.

Occupational therapy will be provided as a deliverable intervention which aims to support users in personally meaningful recovery of their lives and daily occupation/s. A commitment to assessment of occupational need and the therapeutic use of occupation based intervention as core to role is essential.

The occupational therapist will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team committed to collaborative working, and focusing on the provision of high quality evidence based services to individuals or groups.

The post will offer varied opportunities for training and development, with CPD needs being identified and monitored through appraisal. Well defined supervision systems are in place and you will be provided with monthly supervision by the clinical lead Occupational Therapist. We hold monthly learning and development meetings with a strong focus of developing as an Occupational Therapist in this specialism.

Main duties of the job

Assessments and interventions will be completed as part of a multi-disciplinary team. There is a strong commitment to collaborative working, focusing on the provision of high quality evidence based services to the individual.

You will also work closely with and activity coordinator and discharge facilitator, guiding interventions where appropriate.

You will support the recovery and wellbeing of our patients from admission to discharge. You will support the transition from hospital to community linking in with community teams.

About us

Oak Ward is an inpatient mental health unit for both males and females. We are a 12 bedded ward for adults over the age of 65 (occasionally younger) with a wide range of Mental Health problems.

You must hold professional qualification in Occupational Therapy degree or masters level and be HCPC registered

Have worked as an Occupational Therapist with successful completion of preceptorship year.

Experience of working with people with mental health conditions.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent
  • Registration with HCPC
  • Successful completion of preceptorship year as a graduate occupational therapist (or equivalent in non-NHS sectors)
  • Clinical Supervisory Skills course (or willingness to undertake within agreed timescale).
  • Numeracy, Literacy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)
  • Trust training in Appraisal and Recruitment (or willingness to undertake within an agreed timescale)


Desirable

  • Accredited Practice Placement Educator (APPLE)
  • Post-graduate qualification in a relevant area.


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience of delivering Occupational Therapy including experience working with service users in mental health or learning disabilities with complex needs
  • Experience of supervising students on placement
  • Experience of participation in quality improvement activities
  • Experience of developing and delivering training


Desirable

  • Day to day supervision of staff


Skills

Essential

  • Communicate complex and sensitive information in a manner appropriate to the individual and situation.
  • Safeguarding and its application in practice.
  • Significant knowledge of evidence based practice in designated specialist area
