We are seeking an inspiring, dynamic and authentic nurse leader with a shared vision in delivery of the very best patient experience and outcomes, whilst continuing to strive for quality improvements in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.

This is an exciting time for day surgery at Cheltenham General Hospital as we have recently moved in to a new unit, changing the way in which day surgery is delivered and where we are to become a Centre of Excellence in day surgery. We currently provide day surgery for a number of specialties including urology, upper GI, gynaecology and breast and with the recent addition of 2 new theatres, we now include orthopaedic day cases. We also run a urology and chronic pain clinics where we assist with minor procedures. The successful applicant will be working as part of the day surgery team delivering exceptional care for the patients attending the unit.The successful applicant will be an integral member of the Day Surgery leadership team as a Junior Sister working alongside the Senior Sister/Ward manager to support the team with the changes the unit will undergo following the build of the new unit and with the ways in which we will deliver our service.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will have a valid registration with a minimum of three years post registration experience, surgical experience desirable. They will be compassionate, transformational and inclusive with a supporting focus to achieve the trust vision.

The band 6 will be managing and professionally leading the team alongside and in the absence of the Senior Sister/Ward Manager. There is a strong emphasis on the need to develop excellent service performance and working collaboratively with the team members within the surgical division and associated clinical staff.

The successful applicant would be expected to undertake the new role of co-ordinator, liaising with surgeons, anaesthetists and the nursing team to make sure there is a continual flow through all areas of the unit, which include admissions, post op and discharge, ensuring they are staffed safely and appropriately. The successful applicant will also undertake appraisals of staff members, assist with investigating incidents and complaints and be a role model whilst demonstrating a smart and professional image at all times.

We are an expanding team working towards becoming a centre of excellence in day surgery at Cheltenham General. We have recently moved in to a newly built day surgery unit . This is an exciting time for us as a team as we look at how we can improve our day surgery unit to provide all patients with excellent care during their stay with us. The new unit is called Chedworth Surgical Unit and we staff the unit from 07:00 - 21:00 Monday to Friday, with various shift patterns which offers a great work-life balance.Please feel free to contact me the Senior Sister and I would be happy to chat about the Band 6 role in more detail.

Job purpose:

- Focus on the provision of high quality, visible professional leadership for day surgery

- Provide clinical and professional support to the day surgery team to ensure effective management and drive change

- Provide assurance to the Ward Manger and Matron that there is continuous improvement in the delivery of clinical services and are tailored to the needs of the patients

- Act as a strong patient advocate ensuring that a culture of continuous improvement and learning is supported in order to drive quality care delivery across the division

- Ensure that clinical and non-clinical risks are managed, reported and investigated and that remedial action is completed where appropriate. Identifies and deals with issues of poor performance with the support of the Ward Manager

- Work in partnership and collaboration with other leaders within the Division

- Provide nursing leadership, set and maintain professional nursing standards, provide professional nursing advice and direction to the other colleagues within their Division.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Active registration with the NMC as a Registered Nurse (Adult) or equivalent with substantial years post registration experience
  • Recognised Nursing Degree or equivalent including a Recognised Teaching Qualification


Experience

  • Experience of working in an acute surgical environment
  • Previous experience in a relevant speciality


Knowledge/ Skills

  • Self-motivated and able to work under own initiative and prioritise workload
  • Personally resilient and able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment
