The service provides a district level adult rehabilitation service to a population of approximately 450,000 covering Sunderland and South Tyneside and a sub-regional level service (including paediatric assessment & rehabilitation and diagnostic audiology) to a population of approx. 700,000.

The department has an excellent national reputation and has contributed to initiatives and guidelines development in areas including Paediatrics, Learning Disabilities and Clinical Networks.

There are 27 staff and we provide a comprehensive range of services relating to the assessment and rehabilitation of hearing and balance problems in both adults and children are provided, including approximately 12000 adult assessments, 3500 new hearing aid pathways, 1400 paediatric and 450 balance assessments per annum.

There are good links with the University of Sunderland and the department has an active research portfolio, as well as accredited supervisors providing BAA Higher Training across the service.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an enthusiastic Audiology Healthcare Science Practitioner (Band 5) to join our friendly team.

The post holder will contribute to the provision and development of individual management plans in the adult service. They will also be involved in the hearing assessment of older children.

The role may also allow development opportunities in the areas of Paediatrics and Non-Routine Assessment, under the supervision of senior staff, as well as providing supervision for Associate Practitioners and Student Audiologists.

You must be able to demonstrate excellent clinical and communication skills both with patients and professional colleagues, as well as someone who works well within a team.

We pride ourselves on supporting staff development and where appropriate encourage access to the BAA Higher Training Scheme in accordance with service needs.

Essential qualifications for Audiologist / Healthcare Science Practitioner (Band 5) post:

BSc (hons) Degree in Audiology and be eligible to register with either the AHCS, RCCP or HCPC.

Successfully completed clinical competency associated with BSc or Equivalent (e.g., BAA Part I & II examination)

Must be eligible for AHCS/RCCP/HCPC state registration and undertake appropriate CPD activity (for example through participation in an accredited CPD scheme such as the BAA)

Minimum of 3 years experience as a Trainee Audiologist.

The post involves contributing to the provision of an all-age audiology service across the Trust, working as part of a multidisciplinary team. This includes the assessment and rehabilitation of a caseload of adult patients with hearing and balance difficulties.

The requirements of the post will also include supervision of junior and trainee staff.

Essential

• Qualified Practitioner knowledge of adult and paediatric diagnostic audiology and aural rehabilitation, aural impression taking, vestibular testing and paediatric testing
• Good listening and counselling skills
• IT literate with understanding of Audiology PMS
• Ability to communicate with patients of all ages, other professionals, and other agencies.
• Work calmly and methodically when under pressure from a busy and constantly changing caseload.
• Work effectively without direct supervision

• There is an essential requirement for the post holder to travel to/work at various sites across the Trust (possibly on a daily/short notice basis). Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the role.
