As part of a team of you will be involved in checking, performing and reporting a range of routine and non-routine biochemical and immunoassay tests on blood and other bodily fluids. Use of hazardous chemicals is required. You will be expected to work flexibly in reflection of service needs which will include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service. Demonstration of own duties to new or less experienced employees will be expected.
The post holder must not work outside their defined field of competence unless supervised/ approved by a Specialist or Senior Biomedical Scientist.

The department of Blood Sciences is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189, holds IBMS training approval and is committed to maintaining this as part of a wider hospital network in the Southwest. The department uses Q-Pulse for quality management.
We provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic services for the acute Trust and to GP practices across North Devon & North Cornwall. We have an unprecedented relationship with our Primary care colleagues and the new Devon CCG. We are using ICE to develop innovative means of syndrome-based requesting as well as optimising the service in other ways.
A managed laboratory service contract has been jointly procured with South Devon NHSfT meaning that we are well resourced with new Roche Cobas analysers.
We are looking for an individual who is committed to supporting the team in providing best service and quality improvement for patients benefit. Applicants are welcome to visit the department to talk with the team and experience what North Devon has to offer.
Experience of working within an NHS laboratory as a BMS or as a Trainee BMS in the latest stages of completing their IBMS portfolio will be advantageous. There will be contractual obligation to work nights, weekends and public holidays once fully trained and competent.
Completed IBMS registration portfolio is essential to apply for the role, however Trainee BMSs in the latest stages of completing the IBMS portfolio will be considered (min completed) .
This Band 5 role does not qualify for visa sponsorship due to the existing going rate for anybody who has received their sponsorship before 4th April 2024 being �36,700. Anybody who received their sponsorship after the 4th April 2024 or have not yet been sponsored, the going rate is �44,800. Unfortunately, both exceed the current Band 5 salary.
Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week.Normal shift: 09:00 - 17:30, Late: 12:30 - 20:00, Night: 20:00 - 09:00, Weekend Day: 09:00 - 20:00.
