The Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is looking to appoint a Consultant Clinical Scientist (Head of Radiotherapy Engineering, QA and Dosimetry).

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a highly-motivated, very experienced, MPE radiotherapy physicist to lead on machine quality assurance and dosimetry and lead and manage our in-house radiotherapy engineering team. It is essential that you have well-developed leadership, scientific and technical skills.

You will report to the head of radiotherapy physics and will be a leading player in developing the future strategy for NCCC.

NCCC, as part of the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust, delivers highly specialised clinical services at two sites, the Freeman Hospital at Newcastle upon Tyne and the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. The post will be based in Newcastle but will have responsibilities across both sites and so the post-holder will be expected to be flexible in spending time on each.

Job responsibilities

The Freeman Hospital NCCC site includes:
  • Seven Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators
  • Two TomoTherapy treatment units
  • Two Siemens CT scanners
  • A Siemens MRI scanner dedicated to radiotherapy
  • Brachytherapy radiotherapy treatment delivery
  • kV treatment unit
  • Mould Room facilities
  • Treatment planning

The Cumberland Infirmary NCCC site includes:
  • Two Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators
  • A Siemens CT scanner
  • Access to a Siemens MRI scanner
  • Mould Room facilities

We will be replacing one stereotactic unit Autumn 2024 and plan to replace the second in 2025. Following that, the 2 Tomotherapy units will be end of life and are expected to be replaced. We have a well-developed Aria environment and have for many years been a reference centre for Varian Aria training courses.The CQC rated NCCC as Outstanding and an Exemplar on their last IR(ME)R inspection, which is a reflection of the well-led and organised nature of the radiotherapy department.

This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders. NCCC treats a wide range of therapies, including SRS, SABR, HDR brachy, TBI/TSEI, gated lung therapy and cardiac SABR. External beam treatment planning is carried out using RayStation, Elements and Precision. We are highly experienced in the use of AI auto-contouring in the clinical pathway. Treatment plans are checked using Radcalc and Mobius systems and transit IVD is in routine clinical use. NCCC has a strong national teaching pedigree and delivers the MSc in Clinical Science for the national STP program, as well as local FRCR courses, engineering and dosimetrist apprenticeships.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate.The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first months pay.

Person Specification

Quaifications and Education

Essential

  • Honours degree in Physics
  • MSc in related field or equivalent experience
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge in more than one discipline to Doctorate level
  • Registered Clinical Scientist
  • Registered Medical Physics Expert
  • ILM 3 or equivalent


Desirable

  • ILM 5 or equivalent
  • PRINCE 2 Project Management or Equivalent Training
  • Fellowship of a professional body.
