Main duties of the job

The Intensive Care Unit at Walsall has a senior nurse establishment to be able to provide expert leadership and direction to the team 24/7

As part of the senior team, the post holder will be the clinical and managerial leader for ICU. They will be responsible for a capable and knowledgeable nursing team, facilitate smooth and effective patient pathways and ensure safe staffing for the unit

Job Summary

Will be the clinical and managerial leader for the Intensive Care Unit on a 24 hour/ 7 day basis. Will provide clinical expertise and leadership, whilst ensuring safe staffing, clinical co-ordination of patient pathways, patient safety and staff development.

To support the Matrons and Divisional director of Nursing, providing a clear focus for professional and effective clinical leadership and accountability for the nursing service in Planned & Emergency Care.

To promote and enhance the quality of patient care and foster initiatives to improve the patient experience of the service delivered.

To participate in activity with the Division to manage and develop the service in line with national and local requirements ensuring the delivery of performance targets, development of best practice and service improvement agenda.



1. To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, providing input to patients and to liaise with other disciplines and agencies as required in the planning and implementation of patient care.

2. Ensure the delivery of holistic, whilst recognising the individual needs of patients and their relatives

3. To be responsible for monitoring critical care patients to ensure that they receive appropriate standards of care for their Critical Care journey.

4. Maintains the Trusts aims and objectives within the clinical setting

5. Accountable and responsible for accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines

6. Identify opportunities for improvements in nursing practice as highlighted through evidence and research based practice.

7. Undertake additional training as required to meet the needs of the patients and register any additional skills acquired as a result of enhanced practice

8. Provide effective clinical leadership acting as role model for staff

9. Guide and coach ward sisters/nurses to develop and strengthen leadership skills to meet the 24-hour accountability of the role.

10. Be accessible to patients/families and staff, ensuring all patients have the opportunity to seek information, help and support or to communicate problematic or celebratory issues.

11. Ensure effective communication, written, verbal and the use of information technology systems.

12. Ensure documentation is completed timely and in line with national and local guidance.

13. Promote integrated working between all external stakeholders and local workforce.

14. Act as an ambassador for area of responsibility and for wider Trust issues.

15. Promote and maintain confidentiality, privacy and dignity surrounding admission and treatment of patients.


1. Maintain a safe level of nursing staff, taking remedial and proactive action and reporting to the Matron when this cannot be achieved.

2. Co-ordinate, in conjunction with the Matron, the recruitment and selection of staff and monitoring of sickness and absence.

3. Co-ordinate the Individual Performance Review of staff within the area.

Responsible for the maintenance of the ward budgets ensuring ward resources are put to the most efficient and effective use to meet the needs of the patients and the department.

5. Participates in the On Site rota for the Division.

Person Specification



  • RN with current NMC registration
  • Critical Care qualification
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification


  • Leadership/management course
  • Current ALS registration



  • Minimum 4 years post registration of which 2 years as Band 6/7 in Critical Care
  • Minimum 2 years post Critical Care qualification


  • Evidence of experience of participation in a service development project
  • Evidence of working towards or completion of CCN4 competencies
  • Proactive in change management

Skills and knowledge


  • Has a working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the post
  • Must be conversant with all nursing aspects within the speciality
  • Proven organisational skills, can work on own or in team and manage unpredictable work patterns
  • Must provide evidence of effective staff management techniques


  • Proven leadership skills
  • Evidence of self-development and development of others
