The Advanced Analyst role in the Surgery Division is an exciting opportunity to work with multi-disciplinary teams to support projects to improve cancer performance, M& M reporting and further understanding of our patient outcomes in order to improve patient care. This will involve designing data collection and management processes and developing tools to support data collection, management and presentation as well as presenting analytical outputs in a wide range of formats

Main duties of the job

Providing regular and adhoc reports on cancer data, understand and interpret highly complex information and analytical requirements, maintain and develop understanding of data sources, review and plan new information systems, develop datasets and measurement frameworks and undertake benchmark analyses to identify efficiency opportunities

Person Specification

Training and qualifications


  • oPost graduate qualification or equivalent learning/experience
  • oEducated to degree level or equivalent learning/experience
  • oEvidence of continued personal development



  • oProven experience working within an Information or analysis role
  • oExperience of analysing data around multiple cancer pathways or other complex clinical pathways - ie collation and reporting of this data locally
  • oExperience of analysing data around multiple cancer pathways or other complex clinical pathways - ie collation and reporting of this data locally
  • oHighly developed specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and experience in using statistical & analytical techniques and information analysis, acquired though degree level or equivalent plus additional specialist knowledge acquired through post graduate diploma level / or equivalent relevant experience
  • oMasters or above in relevant fields e.g. informatics, analysis, statistics or operational research


  • oExperience of supervising staff/leading projects
  • oDetailed knowledge & understanding of Health Informatics - including healthcare datasets (particularly secondary care), data quality, national strategic control mechanisms for data management, definitional guidance & data protection
  • oAbility to use software packages such a R or Stata

Communication skills


  • oExcellent interpersonal and team working skills
  • oAbility to deal effectively with a range of queries from Directors, Managers, project leads and clinical staff.
