Main duties of the job

The Renal clinical nurse specialist is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, providing nursing expertise and professional leadership within the inpatient, outpatient, community and shared care setting in relation to the treatment, management and nursing care of children and families with chronic and end stage renal failure.

As a senior member of the nursing team, you will be expected to supervise the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of appropriate programmes of care. You will be expected to act as a role model and work with the multidisciplinary team within the ward/directorate ensuring that a high standard of holistic care is maintained for all patients and their families. You will deputise for the CNS band 7 their absence.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications


  • RSCN/ RN child branch (NMC registered)
  • Current NMC registration
  • Work towards relevant university accredited post basic study programmes e.g. teaching and assessing course
  • Non-medical prescribing course or willingness to work towards
  • PACR course or willingness to work towards
  • Evidence of renal specific courses/qualifications

Knowledge & Experience


  • Broad knowledge and experience of clinical nursing practice within a hospital environment.
  • Experience in the clinical area
  • Experience of taking charge
  • Experience of teaching

Skills and Abilities


  • Demonstrate competence in clinical skills relevant to the clinical area
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate effectively with patients, carers and MDT.
  • Computer skills
  • Competence in calculations for safe administration of medicines/fluids
  • Ability to take the lead, initiate and ensure appropriate action in response to the deteriorating patient
  • Clinical decision making ability
  • Teaching/supervisory skills
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Act in a professional manner
  • Renal competent
  • Haemodialysis trained
