King's has a number of tertiary care specialties and our successful rotational programme is designed to offer clinical experience in providing high quality pharmaceutical care to patients across all sites of the Trust (Denmark Hill, Princess Royal University Hospital and Orpington Hospital).

Rotations include anticoagulation, clinical services, hepatology, paediatrics, neurosciences, medicines finance, specialist medicine, cancer & aseptic services, acute medicine, surgery and clinical trials

This post would be suitable for an individual who is looking to develop their clinical skills across a range of specialties, as well as their leadership and managerial skills.

The rotation has structured objectives designed to ensure that the participants gain sufficient experience and skills while contributing to the department and trust priorities.

The successful applicant will be a team player with significant clinical experience as a registered hospital pharmacist, excellent interpersonal skills, a strong desire to learn and a meticulous attention to detail.

Main duties of the job

Key activities of the post holder in each rotation will be to:
  • Act as a specialist practitioner and role model and manage the day to day pharmaceutical care of patients in the speciality
  • Attend daily consultant ward rounds in specific rotations
  • Respond to clinical queries both internally and externally
  • Produce monthly financial and activity reports including monitoring of cost savings initiatives
  • Conduct audit, quality improvement and research projects
  • Participate in activities such as risk management, clinical guideline development and staff training

Job responsibilities

Policy/Service Development
  • To propose and implement policies, guidelines and procedures designed to improve the pharmacy service to patients and the Care Group in conjunction with the Principal Pharmacist.
  • To comment on policy and service changes and plans within the clinical pharmacy service and to contribute to, and participate in, pharmacy service developments in line with departmental and Trust policy.
  • To develop, implement and audit prescribing guidelines for use within the division in conjunction with the Principal Pharmacist.

Patient/Client care
  • To act as a specialist practitioner in the clinical area.
  • To promote and deliver pharmaceutical care specifically for patients within the Care Group and more generally for all patients

Financial/Resource Management
  • To support the Principal Pharmacist in monitoring drug expenditure within the Care Group and provide accurate expenditure information, with appropriate analysis to the Care Group.
  • To identify areas of potential cost-savings within the Care Group, and to implement systems to achieve savings and contain prescribing costs.


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Pharmacist (1 year competency assessed and examined professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent qualification/experience


Desirable

  • Registered Independent Prescriber or willingness to complete


Knowldege

Essential

  • Demonstrates awareness of and commitment to the clinical governance agenda
  • Specialist clinical knowledge and skills relevant to area of practice
  • Experience in directorate pharmacy
