An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Dental Nurse Manager to work within the Community Dental Service which covers South Tyneside, Sunderland and Gateshead. The post is 22.5 hours.

This exciting role sits within the Community Division of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Trust. The Dental Nurse Manager will have responsibility for the management and development of the nursing team. The successful candidate will ensure there is a safe culture within the department, ensuring staff are supported and patients receive an excellent standard of care. They will provide visible, compassionate leadership across all clinical areas working with the dental nurse team. The successful candidate will be a good role model to all displaying the Trusts values and behaviours in their every day work.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide excellent leadership to our Dental Nurse team as well as be able to demonstrate a caring approach to patients, be well organised, flexible in their approach to work and have the ability to work well as part of a team as well as on their own. They must be forward thinking and able to adapt to a range of specialities.

The role will provide leadership to the Dental Nurse team daily, inspiring them with strong leadership, excellent clinical skills, and a visible and exemplary commitment to patient-centeredness. They will work collaboratively with the Senior Dental Nurses and the Matron to escalate department and staffing issues where appropriate. The successful candidate will carry out clinical dental nursing duties, ensuring credibility with the nursing team and role modelling excellent clinical nursing skills and represent the department at meetings and will be expected to take responsibly for delivering agreed actions within the dental nursing team.

Job responsibilities

To be responsible and accountable for the safe, effective and compassionate dental nursing care for all patients in a clinic/department area.

To exercise accountability as set out in the GDC standards.

To supervise, support and educate junior members of the team, acting as a role model.

Support the Matron and Clinical lead to ensure organisational goals/objectives are met within department.

Directly responsible for ensuring that clinical, professional and cleanliness standards are maintained in the entire department.

To ensure effective communication internally and externally, regarding patient care and resources.

To comply with the trusts vision, values and behavioural compact.

Person Specification



  • Current GDC Registration.
  • Knowledge of a range of specific dental nursing procedures acquired through experience and training to diploma level.
  • Management training and experience to post graduate diploma level or degree level training or evidence of currently working towards.
  • Post registration qualification, specific to clinical role.


  • ILM qualification.

Skills and Knowledge


  • Knowledge of best practice in area of specialism.
  • Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
  • Able to work without supervision.
  • Competent in the use of IT packages.
  • Proven interpersonal skills.
  • Fully computer literate and familiar with dental software packages


  • Understanding of budget and financial control systems.

Physical skills


  • Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy



  • Experience working at a senior dental nurse level.
  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Evidence of innovation in practice.
  • Evidence of an ongoing professional development, willingness to maintain and extend skills and knowledge, an ability to share and influence the scope and reach of the team.
  • Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.


  • Experience of line management of staff.
