This position involves leading project deliverables for effective research project management. The responsibilities include independently conducting research activities, building client relationships for business generation, leading, and coaching a team, and acting as a valued internal team member.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting new post where the post holder will play a key role in promoting UCLH as a location for undertaking commercial research, by supporting the requirements and needs to increase the Trust's clinical research activity for the Trust's research growth agenda.

The post holder will be responsible for horizon scanning activities and gathering business intelligence to analyse trends and emerging technologies in commercial clinical research.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications


  • Masters level qualification or equivalent extensive experience
  • Knowledge of national research approval systems and priorities
  • Expert knowledge of the functions and application of research governance and approval systems
  • Knowledge of the legal and financial requirements relating to research approvals and delivery


  • Specialist knowledge and detailed understanding of national R& D priorities and developments



  • Relevant and proven experience in managing complex research
  • Experience in compiling and writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Evidence of report writing and submission to external parties/regulators/funding application
  • Dissemination of complex, specialist information to internal and external stakeholders
  • A proven success in business planning and in the development and effective implementation of strategic plans
  • Experience of effective financial management
  • Experience of running projects/ programmes in a large, complex organisation or network/system

Skills and Abilities


  • Excellent communication skills, including negotiation, with the proven ability to liaise effectively within a multidisciplinary team based environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines and complete tasks within agreed time scales.
  • IT literate: proficient in the use of word processing, Powerpoint and spreadsheet packages
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability and a depth of functional expertise in one or more of the following: finance, operations, strategy, performance management
  • Analysing practices and implementing policies to improve outcomes
  • Project management including independently initiating and delivery projects to targets
  • Ability to prioritise conflicting and changing demands

  • Evidence of political awareness and sensitivity to the high profile of relevant organisations
  • Able to build relationships with commercial and non commercial research stakeholders
  • Possess good inter-personal and negotiating skills
  • Ability to build effective working relationships
  • An ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of current thinking and policy affecting the research and development sector
  • Adaptable to change and constantly striving to improve and deliver high quality and safe services
