We have an exciting opportunity for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist who has experience of working as independent practitioners with skills in Cellular Pathology and who are able to perform a range of histological techniques.

We will also welcome applications from candidates working towards a BSc (Hons) IBMS approved Biomedical Science course (or alternative IBMS/HCPC approved qualification/apprenticeship).

This post presents an opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy hospital laboratory processing 34,000 histology cases per annum.

Main duties of the job

You will carry out a wide variety of routine histological techniques including embedding, microtomy, special stains, immunohistochemistry and frozen sections. Rotation between areas of the department on a regular basis will be required.

You should show evidence of continuing professional development and be able to demonstrate good planning, organisational and interpersonal skills as well as evidence of competence in problem solving and prioritising workloads. Excellent communication and multitasking skills are essential for this post.

Person Specification

Experience and Knowledge


  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures


  • Experience in a histology laboratory offering a similar test repertoire
  • Supervisory/teaching experience
  • Knowledge of COSHH and risk assessments
  • Experience of IQC and EQA
