The North London Partners (NLP) have developed Perinatal Mental Health Services in North Central London across the five boroughs of Camden, Islington, Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey. The service has been running since 2017.

The Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service (SPMHS) is a multi-disciplinary community mental health service for pregnant and postnatal women and birthing people with mental illness. The aim of the team is to detect, prevent and treat perinatal mental health problems to improve the experience of pregnancy and the two years postpartum for service users and their families.

The service consists of four teams, supported by an Administration Hub
  • West team (Barnet)
  • East team (Enfield & Haringey) &
  • South team (Camden & Islington)
  • Maple (Providing psychological interventions for women who have experienced birth related trauma & loss, across the partnership).

This role is based in the East Team, (Enfield & Haringey). The post holder will work from the East Team base in N9 7HD

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be supported and supervised by the band 7 senior perinatal clinicians in the Perinatal Service to carry out, a high number of comprehensive new patient assessments and manage a caseload of patients in line with the requirements of the service line operational policy and service line strategy and that safe, evidence based, effective, culturally competent care is delivered in a timely manner to service users.

In order to meet the needs of the new Partnership services you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. This may mean that you are required to work at any location that fall under Barnet, Enfield and Harringay Trust and Camden and Islington Trust. The Trust reserves the right to require staff to work at such other places or locations as it considers reasonable and necessary on a temporary or permanent basis.

Job responsibilities

Main clinical responsibilities:
  • Undertake specialist initial clinical assessment and formulation using a range of both specialist and generic tools
  • Make an autonomous judgement about own caseload
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care in negotiation with service users, carers, and other services, considering the needs of a diverse community
  • Intervene using a range of therapeutic modalities e.g., CBT, Systemic Family Therapy etc.
  • Assist in and determining the point of discharge / transfer of the service user
  • Communicate clinical assessment or presentation to others within the team and appropriate external agencies including GPs
  • Maintain contemporaneous records to the standard required by the trust and the relevant professional body
  • Assess and manage risk
  • Encourage service users to accept an optimum level of responsibility for their programme of care and with their consent, where appropriate, seek the cooperation of friends / relatives / carers.

Person Specification

Qualifications/ Registrations


  • Diploma or degree leading to professional Registered qualification in Nursing, Occupational Therapy or Social Work
  • Current registration with relevant professional body
  • Evidence of ongoing relevant professional development


  • Relevant additional qualification in therapeutic model, e.g CBT, CFT, DBT etc.

Experience / Knowledge


  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary CMHT or MHLT.
  • A sound knowledge base in the provision of mental health services and preferred treatment methods


  • Post-qualification experience working with women in the perinatal period with severe and enduring mental health needs and families

Skills/ Abilities


  • Skills in assessment, intervention, and management in wide range of mental illness presentations presented in adult mental health services.
  • Evidence of interest in and ability to contribute to service development
