Please note this is a part-time Band 7 role, 0.69 WTE, 26 hours.

We are looking for an experienced occupational Therapist or physiotherapist in Stroke & Neurology and community rehabilitation to lead the Early Supported Discharge (ESD) therapy team at Good Hope Hospital. The ESD team consists of Occupational therapists, a physiotherapist and Therapy assistants. ESD also has access to Speech & Language therapy. The geographical area covered by the ESD team is North Birmingham and South Staffordshire.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Band 6 Occupational therapist or physiotherapist in stroke and neurology. We are looking for a dynamic team leader who will lead the ESD team and support service development within stroke and neurology services.

You will join an experienced therapy team committed to delivering high quality therapy for stroke & neurology patients. The stroke & neurology therapy team includes an acute, ESD and neuro out-patient physiotherapy service.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should be Band 6 physiotherapist or occupational therapist. It is essential they have expert clinical skills in stroke & neurology and experience working in the community setting. The post holder must have good communication and interpersonal skills and possess leadership qualities. They must be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, have excellent organisational and time management skills, teaching skills and an enthusiasm for service development.

The Band 7 ESD Team Leader will undertake a lead role in planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the caseload on a day-to-day basis. They will work closely with the Neuro Out-patient physiotherapy service, the Acute Stroke & Neurology team and community teams.

Applicants must be prepared to participate in a 7-day working service.

A drivers' licence and car is essential for the role.

Person Specification



  • *Current registration Health and Care Professions Council, OT or PT register.
  • *Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy degree qualification or equivalent and significant NHS post graduate experience
  • *Documented evidence of Continued Professional Development of relevant specialist knowledge and skills
  • *Good standard of general education including GCSE maths and English grade C and above.


  • *Evidence of leadership training.
  • *Membership of a professional special interest group or national/regional network (RCOT specialist section neurological practice or ACPIN
  • *Recent post graduate training relevant to stroke & neurology



  • *Understanding of organisational structure of the NHS and Social Care.
  • *An demonstrated ability to provide OT or PT professional/clinical leadership
  • *Significant experience of working in an acute hospital or community setting with neurological and stroke experience.
  • *Experience of working within Stroke or Community team and participating in service development.
  • *Experience of supporting and supervision of junior therapists, student therapists and therapy support workers
  • *A specialist knowledge across a range of occupational therapy or physiotherapy practices, routine and non-routine, requiring relevant specialist knowledge in the field of stroke and neurology.
  • *Understanding of current legislation and application to Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy and community setting.

  • *Demonstrate enthusiasm and an interest in developing expertise within Stroke & Neurology
  • *Demonstrate a professional attitude.
  • *An ability to cope with moving/manoeuvring patients/equipment on a daily basis.
  • *An ability to frequently concentrate on patient assessments and treatments.
  • *An ability to cope with occasional exposure to distressing/emotional situations.
  • *Able to contribute to weekend rota (1 in 5 weekends).
