An exciting 6-month secondment opportunity has arisen for a senior sister ward manager on 3AE our 22 bedded CCU (coronary care unit ). The successful applicant will lead and manage the team to deliver high quality care, efficient patient pathways and maintain safe clinical environments with 24 hour responsibility for safe staffing. The candidate must have extensive cardiology experience and proven leadership skills.

You will be key in the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality care to patients with both acute and chronic cardiac conditions. You will lead by example and have excellent organisational skills as well as being an effective communicator.

You will guide the team through change to develop the Cardiology service in line with the Trust vision supporting positive patient outcomes and service improvements.

Main duties of the job

The role of Senior Sister/Charge Nurse is to have an expert practitioner who leads by example and who can provide leadership and organisation to the multidisciplinary team. They will deputise for the matron when necessary. They will contribute to ensuring Trust objectives are achieved and will be proactive in service development within the CAG.

Person Specification



  • Experience in caring for acutely unwell patients
  • Experience in management and leadership


  • Relevant band 6 and above experience within cardiology



  • Excellent communication skills with MDT and patients and their carers
  • Ability to support the development of others
  • Evidence of critical thinking and initiative to solve problems and mange workload
  • Acts as a role model


  • Ability to respond to challenges in a proactive and flexible way



  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm towards teaching and sharing knowledge
  • Ability to develop own learning needs and interests that will help to do own job better
  • Ability to take an active role in agreed activities and keep a record of them evidence of CPD



  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Post Registration Clinical course
  • Evidence of Degree level study or equivalent experience
  • ILS


  • Mentorship course or relevant teaching course



  • Ability to work as a part of MDT
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and oral
  • Can demonstrate an approachable friendly enthusiastic and professional manner
  • Ability to communicate with patients in an empathetic manner
  • Flexible approach including ability for weekend working when required
