An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced nurse to join our anaesthetic-led chronic pain service at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH).

Working as a core member of the multidisciplinary alongside health professionals such as a consultant paediatric anaesthetist specialised in chronic pain management, psychologist, occupational therapist and physiotherapist this is primarily an outpatient post supporting chronic pain patients providing a quality service and meeting national standards.

In addition to supporting children and young people with the most common forms of headaches, abdominal pain, and musculoskeletal pain the RMCH Chronic Pain Service also treats chronic pain due to a wide range of other causes such as rare medical conditions, autistic spectrum disorder and cerebral palsy, post-surgical pain, and pain due to chemotherapy.

As a highly specialist nurse you will have substantial recent experience of working directly with children/young people with complex and changing health care needs and with their families either in an acute inpatient and/or community setting wishing to specialise in paediatric pain management. Alternatively, you may be a specialist nurse in an adult pain service who has transferable skills to a paediatric setting.

We can offer you a supportive and friendly environment with senior professional support and opportunities for ongoing postgraduate learning.

Main duties of the job

As the lead nurse specialist for the anaesthetic-led chronic pain service you will contribute to the MDT triage of new patient referrals.. This is with the aim of enabling patients with persistent pain to develop their coping skills for everyday activities and confidence to work towards their home and school goals and improve their wellbeing. You will be the first point of contact when patients ring for advice/queries/repeat prescriptions.

Ideally you will have undertaken post-graduate study or have extensive experience within or related to this speciality.

You will play a valued role in the multidisciplinary team including attending MDT meetings, delivering collaborative teaching sessions, and being involved in service development of the RMCH Pain Team. Liaison with local services (GPs/Schools) is an important element as we receive referrals from a wide geographical area.

You will be heavily involved in the transition of patients to adult services.
