This highly specialist speech and language therapist (SLT) will haveconsiderable experience in clinical voice disorders and counsellingskills/psychological approaches, as well as established competencies andexperience in delivering trans and gender diverse voice and communicationtherapy (vis a vis the Competency Framework RCSLT, 2018). They will workas a gender specialist SLT and independently manage a caseload of trans and gender diverse service users in the delivery of high-quality voice exploration and modification therapy.

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist mental health trust with a focus on training and education alongside a full range of mental health services and psychological therapies for children and their families, young people and adults.

Within the Trust is the London Adult Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) - the first clinic of its kind in the UK opening in 1966. It continues as the largest gender specialist centre in the UK with a national remit, and serves to deliver biopsychosocial care to trans and non-binary adults seeking alleviation of gender dysphoria and a space to explore their gender identity. The clinic is staffed from a multi-disciplinary team of psychologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists, specialist nurses, speech and language therapists, speciality doctors and other medical practitioners. The team members are lead clinicians, researchers and trainers in the field with an international reputation.

we welcome applications from established Band 7 and very experienced Band 6 voice specialist SLTs who have a competent overview of trans and non-binary voice communication therapy and cultural humility, but who may lack significant clinical experience in trans voice. Training and supervision will be provided, but fast-paced learning will be expected. Experience as a placement educator and supervisor would be helpful.

Person Specification

Qualification/Training

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy qualification
  • HCPC Registration and License to Practice
  • Certified Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Evidence of successful completion and portfolio of advanced and short courses in clinical voice assessment and therapy, counselling skills and vocal skills development
  • Member of relevant RSCLT Clinical Excellence Networks


Desirable

  • Certificate or equivalent in counselling ski
  • Member of the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists (BAGIS)


Previous Experience

Essential

  • Significant postgraduate experience in clinical voice
  • Significant experience MDT working
  • Experience in supervising junior SLTs and SLT students on clinical placement
  • Some experiential development and understanding of own voice skills


Desirable

  • Significant or developing experience in delivering trans and non-binary voice and communication therapy (individual and group settings)
