We are seeking a Senior Team Leader to join our expanding Appointment Centre at Whipps Cross. You will be a point of contact for our patients and represent the Trust with your caring, helpful approach.

You must have excellent communication skills and be confident in leading a team of Appointment Coordinators, you must also be passionate, empathetic, provide excellent customer service and able to work under pressure in our very busy environment which is essential for this role. Previous experience of FDS (FASTER DIAGNOSTIC STANDARD) urgent suspected cancer pathway is essential.

The Appointment Centre operates between 8.30 - 17.00 Monday - Friday

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for supporting the Appointment Manager and Team Leaders with the day to day running of the service. The post holder will line manage approximately 3 W.T.E Team Leaders and a further 30 Appointment Coordinators across the department.

The senior supervisor will work as part of a team of managers to coordinate daily workloads across the Contact Centre and administration teams, ensuring deadlines are met and quality is achieved and maintained. The post holder will work closely with his peer, team supervisors and senior managers and ensure an efficient, effective, and courteous service is provided for all patients, GPs, hospital staff and other service users contacting Central Appointments.

The post holder will ensure all staff are adequately trained and have training plans and records in place. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring department is properly staffed to deliver the service.

The post holder will ensure that all bookings are made within the agreed clinic rules and that National and Trust waiting times are adhered to and bring to the attention of the departmental managers when there are deviations from Trust protocols and policies.

Person Specification



  • Minimum 2 years line management experience in an NHS environment
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a customer focused or service area
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of staff management
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in the management of FDS (faster diagnostic standard)


  • Cerner millennium experience or experience working with an electronic appointment or scheduling system



  • Good verbal communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage people and lead teams.
  • Ability to input, retrieve and analyse information
  • Ability to work on own initiative and be self-motivated.
  • Ability to prioritise own work and that of others
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and hospital information systems



  • A working knowledge of Outpatient Access and other relevant national targets)
  • Be able to effectively communicate with patients and colleagues
  • Able to deal with conflicts and complaints and achieve a resolution.
  • Ability to input and retrieve information on a computerised system.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality



  • A Level or equivalent in English and Maths
  • Management Degree or equivalent experience
