An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Registered Nurse to join the Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT) pain service. The MFT pain service is a well-established multidisciplinary team incorporating the roles of highly skilled nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, and pain consultants across the spectrum of acute and chronic pain.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS Acute Hospital Trusts in the UK, comprising ten hospitals and a multitude of local, regional and national clinical services. The Trust is a major tertiary referral centre for medical and surgical specialties. Clinical & Scientific Services provides services to support these including the Manchester Pain Management Service. This post will incorporate cross site and cover all specialities including colorectal, gastroenterology, trauma orthopaedics, burns and plastics, vascular, orthopaedics, cardiothoracics and gynaecology.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be expected to work across the spectrum of acute and chronic pain giving support and advice to patients in both the inpatient and outpatient environment.The post holder will possess good communication skills, able to demonstrate an aptitude for working independently, as well as in a team, and have good management and clinical skills. They will participate in the development, delivery and evaluation of the Pain Service. The post holder will need to be flexible, self-motivated and committed to the challenges of maintaining our high quality standards of care for all our patients within this ever growing specialty. It is essential that any applicants have at acute care experience in a specialty related to acute or chronic pain. A non-medical prescribing qualification and evidence of teaching skills are desirable.

Person Specification



  • Registered General Nurse
  • Educated to diploma level
  • Teaching qualification
  • Evidence of level 3 studies


  • Pain Management qualification
  • Graduate or working towards first degree in health related subject
  • Non medical prescribing course (or willingness to undertake)



  • Experience as a band 5 practitioner level
  • Recent relevant pain management experience
  • Portfolio of evidence showing achievements in practice/speciality
  • Recent evidence of continuing professional and personal development, both clinical and managerial
  • Teaching experience

Aptitude / Leadership


  • Ability to work as part of a Multidisciplinary team as well as an autonomous practitioner
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Evidence of excellent clinical record keeping
  • Confidence to challenge poor practice and ability to address difficult issues


  • Undertaken a leadership programme
  • Advanced communication skills course
  • Motivational interviewing course



  • Competent in use of IT packages such as Microsoft Word and Powerpoint
  • Good knowledge of clinical information systems


  • Competent in databases and spreadsheets

Audit and research


  • Demonstrates ability and knowledge on how to undertake audit and feedback to clinicians
  • Demonstrates knowledge of research based practice


  • Completed course/module in research methods
