Service Manager

An exciting position has become available in Integrated Medicine B covering Dermatology, Haematology, Rheumatology, Pain Management, Diabetes and Endocrinology.. We are looking to recruit a band 7 service manager to join our management team. We are looking for a proactive individual that can actively support and develop our services while maintaining a pragmatic approach to the challenges of the directorate.

To assist the Directorate Manager and work in collaboration with our existing Service Manager to develop and deliver high quality patient/service, user focused and cost effective pathways and services, meeting the requirements of our Commissioners and Trust's Annual Business Plan.

To assist the Directorate Manager in providing and developing a working environment and open culture which fosters high morale and commitment among all staff and promotes their well-being, professional and personal development.

To support the business planning processes within the Care Group.

Main duties of the job

To ascertain best practice for the services and benchmark RBH against them.

To support the matron / DM from within Integrated Medicine B on all aspects of patient flow ensuring services support RBH clinical pathways, elective and non elective.

To ensure that the Service's activities focus on supporting patient care within available resources and in line with the strategic direction of the Care Group and the Trust.

To ensure delivery of excellent, patient focused and cost effective services which are responsive to the needs of the patients, carers and GPs and are in line with the Trust strategic direction and service plans.

Deal with and respond to complaints as required in accordance with Trust policy, ensuring that any necessary remedial action is taken.

To ensure the efficient organisation of services, co-ordinating Consultant and Junior Doctors' rota's with the Directorate Manager and Clinical Lead in order to support the delivery of Doctors support on the wards.

To support the Directorate Manager and Matron to achieve CIP targets and work with key stakeholders and partners to maximise the CIP agenda.

To attend and participate in Directorate meetings and to represent the Directorate as required, deputising for the Directorate Managers as appropriate.

As a member of the Directorate Management Team, support the Directorate Managers, Matrons and Clinical Directors to ensure the Care Group meets performance standards.

Qualifications /Training


  • Management/leadership qualification or equivalent experience at post graduate level.


  • First Degree



  • Proven experience of working in management/leadership role in acute healthcare.
  • Experience of leading and motivating a team.
  • Experience of successful performance management leading to a positive outcome
  • Leading service change to improve performance.
  • Experience of working in a relevant speciality.


  • Responsible for budget and budget setting.
  • Business case development

Knowledge & Skills


  • Awareness of current national access standards
  • Financial procedures, budget setting and financial processes.
  • Business / strategic planning.
  • Change management.
  • IT systems including Microsoft office. Service improvement transformation.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills - ability to analyse complex data and information


  • NHS IT systems



  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal - able to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive information, use persuasion, influencing and negotiation skills with individuals and groups including stakeholders.
