An exciting opportunity has arisen for a physiotherapist/nurse with excellent people and organisational skills to join our busy sleep, oxygen and home ventilation team. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Physio or nurse with previous experience in treating patients with chronic respiratory/ neuromuscular disease, sleep apnoea, and ventilator failure. Previous experience/knowledge of assessment for ambulatory oxygen will be an advantage.

Our ideal candidate will enjoy working in and contributing to a team. They will be enjoy working in a busy environment, and working with a variety of both inpatients and outpatients. They will require good communication and organisational skills and enjoy team-working.

Main duties of the job

Our team provide the sleep, home non-invasive ventilation and ambulatory service at RSCH and in two of our community hospitals across Guildford and Waverley. We also provide respiratory assessment, advice and support to patients with neuromuscular disease, musculo-skeletal problems and obesity hypoventilation.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn new diagnostic skills (e.g. sleep studies, Blood gases) and will be supported to increase their knowledge and skills in this field.

Job responsibilities

To work within sleep team to provide assessment and management of chronic respiratory failure and management of sleep disordered breathing

To work with the multi professional home team to assess and treat patients with chronic respiratory conditions and non-respiratory conditions (including progressive neurological disease) causing respiratory compromise including sputum retention, hypoxia, thoracic cage immobility, respiratory failure and sleep apnoea both in the acute setting and in their own homes.

To provide assessment and management of ambulatory oxygen therapy including walking tests blood gases. Monitor compliance data provided by the oxygen provider to ensure cost efficient use of oxygen therapy.

To support the sleep and home NIV team in the organisation and provision of an efficient, high quality and co-ordinated multiprofessional service for patients across primary and secondary care. Aiming to provide rapid discharge and prevention of hospital admission.

To undertake a defined clinical caseload, under the supervision of the consultant physiotherapist.

To ensure that patient and service standards and priorities are met.

To provide clinical supervision to assigned junior staff as required

Person Specification



  • Professional registration HCPC/RCN
  • Honors degree or equivalent


  • Member of Specific interest group



  • Demonstrable post graduate experience.
  • Evidence of post registration education and continuous professional development.


  • Previous experience in non-invasive ventilation & CPAP
  • Previous experience in both acute and community settings
  • Previous experience in managing patients with respiratory
  • Advanced level external courses or equivalent to support advanced knowledge base of medical respiratory
  • Knowledge of systems for data recording, analysis and reporting.
  • Appraisal training
  • Evidence of relevant respiratory experience to support knowledge base in specialist area
  • Knowledge of long term and ambulatory oxygen therapy
