We have an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and enthusiastic professional to join our Trust Health and Safety Team as a Health and Safety Advisor.

The post holder will work with the Head of Trust Health and Safety and Health and Safety Manager to support and advise the Trust on health and safety matters across a wide range of settings, including clinical and non-clinical areas and to be a point of contact and competent advisor to staff and managers in this regard.

Main duties of the job

The ideal individual for this post will have at least a Level 3 Health and Safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH Certificate). They will also be registered with a relevant professional body such as IOSH and/or IIRSM and have a proven track record advising on Health and Safety in a large complex organisation (preferably healthcare).

The individual must be able to work autonomously to support clinical and corporate services in identifying realistic solutions to health and safety issues and must have some demonstrable experience in training, mentoring and directly supervising other staff. In return, the role offers good development to someone looking to build a solid health and safety career.

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon and offers a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics and maternity services. The Trust's services at Mount Vernon Hospital include routine day surgery, delivered at a modern treatment centre, a minor injuries unit and outpatient clinics.

  • Recognised Specialist Qualification (e.g. NEBOSH / NCRQ cert or above) in Health and Safety.
  • Professional Membership such as IOSH or IIRSM.]
  • Practical health and safety experience working in a large complex organisation. (Consultancy experience will be assessed proportionately).
  • Good understanding of health and safety and fire safety legislation, standards and technical guidance, and their application.
  • Knowledge and experience in implementing HSG 65
  • Experience of developing and delivering health and safety related training and in assessing others in regards to health and safety competence
  • Experience of initiating and conducting risk assessments including COSHH.
  • Experience of reviewing and writing health and safety reports, auditing, carrying out inspections, and complex investigation.
  • Experience of engaging and presenting to managers and staff, actively participating in committees and forums, and effectively communicating complex information to a variety of persons
  • Effective people skills, to engage, coach, negotiate and influence
  • Confident communicator that can network and work with managers, supervisors and technical specialists across and beyond the Trust.
  • Able take a proportionate, sensible and pragmatic approach to health and safety management.


  • Good knowledge or Estates & Facilities issues and experience of working collaboratively with Estates & Facilities teams
  • Experience of working in an NHS, Public Sector, Higher Education or Highly Technical environment.
  • Experience in implementing formal health and safety management systems e.g. BS OSHAS 18001 (or ISO 45001).
  • Practical knowledge of the Building Regulations 2010 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
  • Knowledge, interpretation and application of the Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs)
  • Experience of working with the Health and Safety Executive and/or other External Agencies.
  • Line management or supervisory experience
  • Project management experience
