Are you an experienced paediatric nurse with knowledge and skills around epilepsy, looking for a new challenge in the community setting?If so then we are looking for you.

We have the opportunity to work within a community epilepsy nurse specialist role within the wider community children's nursing service in Newham. This is a fixed term contract for 12 months to cover maternity leave. You need to have working experience of epilepsy, medication management including teaching emergency medication and awareness of adjunctive therapies.

As an experienced paediatric nurse you would be expected to provide autonomous skilled nursing care and support to children, young people and their families, across a variety of community settings, from home, school and clinic. You are required to have skills in clinical assessment, individual needs assessment and care planning, alongside the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary, multi agency team. Good communication skills are a must alongside a flexible and forward thinking attitude. This role involves advocating for children with epilepsy, teaching families, plus liaison across primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Main duties of the job

o Responsibility for providing specialist nursing skills, knowledge and expertise in the care and management of children and young people with epilepsy.

o Carries out clinical assessment of children and young people's needs and plans and implements packages of care accordingly.

o Supports the child, family and carers holistically, in response to their specific needs, maximising their independence and quality of life.

Liaising and acting as a specialist resource within the multidisciplinary and multi-agency team.

To develop local services and processes of care for children & young people with epilepsy in line with nationally agreed best practice and recognised clinical guidelines.

To develop education programmes for a range of multi-disciplinary professionals on the clinical management of epilepsy.

o Acknowledge the specific cultural needs of children and families and ensures that care is delivered in a way that is sensitive to such needs.

Education and Qualification


  • oRSCN/ RN Child Branch
  • o1st Level Degree (or working towards)
  • oEvidence of continued professional development


  • oAssociation Pediatrics Epilepsy Training (PETS) Level 1



  • oExperience of nursing CYP with epilepsy and/or community nursing
  • oExperience of interagency working
  • oExperience of supporting children and families through the child protection process
  • oExperience of managing staff and resources
  • oExperience of providing supervision in an advisory role

Knowledge and Skills


  • oAdvanced clinical skills in history taking and assessment of paediatric epilepsy.
  • oExcellent verbal / written communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • oEffective team management and clinical leadership skills
  • oAbility and confidence to devise and deliver education programmes effectively.
  • oAbility to work as an autonomous practitioner and to make sound clinical judgements and decisions regarding patient care and to be responsible and accountable for choices made.
  • oDemonstrates evidence-based care and decision making that is responsive to the needs of clients and carers and negotiated in partnership with them.
  • oAbility to positively influence all levels of the multi-disciplinary team
  • oAbility to utilise clinical skills within a variety of clinical settings
  • oUnderstanding of clinical governance and ability to implement the associated systems and process in delivery of care
