We are seeking to appoint an experienced healthcare scientist specialist to support the radiation protection service provided to users of ionising and non-ionising radiation in United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and other organisations.

Main duties of the job

The post holder's main role will be to undertake radiation protection assessments of facilities and medical equipment to ensure dose and performance levels do not fall outside nationally and locally set criteria.

The successful candidate will join a friendly team of scientists and technologists providing comprehensive diagnostic radiology and radiation protection support to users of radiation in Lincolnshire. All staff within the team are encouraged to contribute towards the development of the service and the introduction of new imaging technologies and techniques. The department actively encourages scientific development and professional activities. You will need excellent communication and organisational skills, together with a demonstrable ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. The post holder will be based at Lincoln and be able to travel to other hospitals in the area.

Person Specification



  • BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science Medical Physics (Radiation Physics), or equivalent
  • To be on the Register of Clinical Technologists
  • Training to postgraduate diploma or equivalent level of knowledge.

Previous Experience


  • Experience in the use of radiation in healthcare, medical imaging evaluation, radiation detection and measurement.


  • Experience in the use of ionising and non-ionising radiation in healthcare.

Particular Evidence


  • Knowledge in radiation physics as applied in medicine.
  • Knowledge of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of a range of imaging equipment.
  • Knowledge of national standards, professional and other guidelines relevant to the specialist area.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare.


  • Ability to test a range of ionising and non-ionising radiation equipment in healthcare.
  • Ability to give presentations at scientific meetings
