Berkshire Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) is a mature, successful pathology network which is a contractual joint venture between the following Trusts:
  • Ashford and St. Peter's NHS Foundation Trust
  • Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust
  • Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust
  • Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust
  • Surrey & Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust

As Deputy General Manager you will have a key leadership role and be responsible for the operational delivery of all aspects of Blood Sciences for Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Service Network. You will form part of the Blood Sciences leadership team, working in partnership with the General Manager, Deputy General Managers, Business Managers, Finance and HR and will play a fundamental role in driving forward the departments vision for service improvement and quality.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will report to the General Manager and will provide appropriate support to the General Manager and the Clinical Leads and Site Managers in the delivery of all operational functions within Blood Sciences at our Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) and Ashford Saint Peters Hospital (ASPH) sites. The individual will have responsibility for defined services and allocated resources. A specific key requirement of this post is to support the Biochemistry department with your specialist knowledge and skills, assuring the quality of the Blood Sciences service within the network. You will also be responsible for the overarching operational delivery of the BSPS pathology services at the Royal Berkshire Foundation trust hospital, working closely with the BSPS deputy General Managers of the respective pathology services, in addition to senior trust management team at Royal Berkshire Foundation Trust Hospital.

Under the Blood Sciences General Managers leadership, the Deputy General Manager will:
  • Be accountable to the General Manager for the operational performance of the department's services.
  • Lead the site management team across RBH and ASPH Trusts
  • Be accountable for delivery of financial targets for the departments services
  • Ensure excellent quality throughout the Blood Sciences teams
  • Deputies for the General Manager

To operationally manage the Royal Berkshire and Ashford Saint Peters Foundation trust hospitals Blood Sciences laboratories

To maintain ISO accreditation

To be the specialist in and advise onBiochemistry practices across the network.

To maintain financial control across the service lines.

To promote staff development and ensure patient safety.

To ensure all information is validated and complies with information governance policies.

To deputise for General Manager Blood Sciences


To participate in the strategic development and implementation as well as direction of BSPS through the pathology executive team.

To give strategic direction to Blood Sciences Services taking account of the context of the local, network, regional and national agendas.

To assist with the business planning within Blood Sciences across the network, integrating this into the wider Pathology planning process.


To manage capacity and demand ensuring that turnaround time targets are met.

To develop and implement an annual business plan that delivers the key business goals and objectives for Blood Science.

To develop and present business cases for capital and service developments as required.

To proactively identify potential obstacles to achieving key business goals and objectives and establish appropriate handling strategies to overcome these.

To establish and maintain effective business performance management processes that monitors performance against plans. In the event of under-performance, take rapid and decisive corrective action to correct.

To validate and present key performance data and information for discussion with the Blood Sciences team at monthly performance reviews.

To participate in negotiating service contracts internally and externally as appropriate.

  • oPrevious successful management experience, at a senior level for at least three years,
  • oManagement qualification
  • oHigher qualification in Biochemistry, MSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
  • oHCPC registration


  • An in-depth knowledge of the health care sector



  • Good working knowledge of a large network Pathology services, gained through management responsibility and which includes an excellent working relationship with clinicians.
  • Post-registration relevant experience of a blood sciences service at a senior level with a proven successful track record
