We are looking for a HCPC-registered clinical scientist to join our dynamic team at UHBW as a diagnostic radiation physicist. You will work within Radiation Science Services (RSS) to provide diagnostic radiation imaging, and radiation and laser protection services to departments within UHBW and to external customers in the region.

You will be joining a friendly team of healthcare science specialists who work with a full range of imaging equipment which includes mobiles, dental, DR rooms, CT and interventional imaging rooms. This position comes with future linked progression to an 8a role as your career develops and the need for additional specialist advisory roles are required by the service.

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with clinical teams, helping to provide a safe radiation workplace and having a direct impact on patient care.

Responsibilities include

o Acting as an operator under the definitions of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017 (IR(ME)R)

o Participating in the physics quality assurance service for radiation imaging and associated equipment

o Participating in optimisation of clinical imaging equipment, protocols and techniques

o Participating in the systems to measure and assess patient radiation doses.

o Participating in the systems to measure and assess staff and environmental radiation doses.

o Contributing to the development of methods and protocols to evaluate radiation measurement equipment guided by legislative requirements and national guidelines.

o Supporting the Radiation Protection Adviser(s) in all areas that use diagnostic X-rays.

o Assisting in the teaching of radiological physics and radiation protection outside the department including FRCR, IRR, IR(ME)R and radiographic education.

o Supervising trainee clinical scientists and technologists.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • BSc Honours Physics or equivalent
  • Relevant MSc or higher degree or equivalent
  • Certificate of completion of STP training scheme for medical physicists, or equivalent
  • Registration as Clinical Scientist.


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Experience with diagnostic imaging physics. Specialist knowledge across the full range of working procedures and practices in radiation imaging physics building on theoretical knowledge and practical experience. This includes clinical image acquisition and processing systems.
  • Experience with radiation protection in diagnostic radiology. Specialist knowledge across the full range of working procedures and practices in imaging departments building on theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
  • Experience in patient and staff dosimetry
  • Experience with managing and prioritising own work
  • In depth understanding of the relevant legislation, national standards and other professional guidelines


Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Highly developed physical accuracy and dexterity for making precision measurements and adjustments on both simple and complex radiation imaging equipment.
  • Able to lift moderate loads within the hospital and for transportation between hospitals for regular QA tests (test equipment including Perspex to mimic patient tissue weighing up to 8 kg.)
  • Able to use Office packages (e.g. Excel, Word) to set up documents and spreadsheets and extract and collate information
  • Ability to plan and organise projects (under supervision)


Desirable

  • Able to use and modify sophisticated image and data processing software
