Here at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, we have an opportunity for you to join our existing professional team of Clinical Coders.

This vacancy is for a Team Leader on the West Team based at Musgrove Park Hospital where you will manage a small team of Qualified and Trainee Coders supported by Clinical Coding Managers

Main duties of the job

Clinical coding is a high profile area of work and our team collects data about every patient who visits the Trust, investigating all aspects of their journey. Our role is essential for the effective management of the Trust and directly influences patient care and the Trust's income though Payment by Results and future contracts.We also actively link in with the Trusts Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) team which is a national project pulling together all the good things we do to enable us to learn from other Trusts.This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced clinical coder looking to advance their career within the profession. We are looking for an enthusiastic and flexible individual who is able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

Job responsibilities

The Clinical Coder Team Leader will code in line with National Standards and line manage a small team of Qualified and Trainee Coders. They will audit coding performance and proactively manage their team to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity and ensure that their coding is in line with expected National requirements and standards. They will work with the Clinical Coding Operational and Development Managers to support the training and development of their team, including their own professional development. The post holder will work with Clinical and Administrative teams to ensure timely availability of medical records and promote accuracy of note recording within the Trust, attending external meetings as needed.

Person Specification



  • ACC Accreditation and 3 years of experience
  • Human Anatomy/Human Physiology at least GCSE level or above


  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development



  • Be experienced in the use of ICD-10 and OPCS-4 nomenclatures
  • Have experience in working in a clinical coding department in an acute Trust for at least 3 years
  • Have knowledge of the NHS Digital Terminology and Classifications Delivery Service auditor Code of Conduct
  • Competent in the use of clinical coding computer based systems and navigation of Trust Clinical Systems
  • Knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and terminology that describes the human body, its diseases and treatments
  • Ability to extract and analyse relevant information
  • Ability to organise staff and prioritise workloads
  • Ability to motivate staff and work as a member of a team


  • Knowledge of Trust policies relevant to Clinical Coding, Data Confidentiality, Data Security and Human Resources policies.
  • Advanced computing skills. Good understanding of PbR Finance Reporting and HRG (Healthcare Resource Groups) and their relationship with Clinical Coding Outputs.
  • Supervisory or leadership Experience
