To support the Head and Neck clinical services in supportive care for patients with Head and Neck cancers, their relatives and carers.

The postholder will be expected to work closely with the Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist, the Head and Neck Consultants, the Consultant Oncologist, and the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT).

To be part of an established integrated cancer and palliative care service that influences care by specialist practice, encompassing advanced clinical practice, education and evidence based learning.

To provide support to the current Head & Neck CNS in providing expert Head and Neck cancer supportive care in order to implement National Personalised Care Agenda and living well and beyond cancer agenda. To act as a Keyworker for patients with Head and Neck cancer, their families/carers, providing practical, psychological and emotional support.

OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE OF THE POST:

This post will provide support to the current Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist in providing Head and Neck cancer supportive care in order to implement NICE Supportive and Palliative Care Guidance and Personalised Care Agenda. The postholder will be expected to complete a competency programme.

As a result of the centralisation of Head and Neck cancer surgery to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, the postholder will have a key role in supporting the co-ordination of care for those patients having treatment.

Main duties of the job

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • To support patients and their family/carers at the Head and Neck clinics, when breaking bad news and discussing treatment plans.
  • To support patients and their families/carers as they cope with the diagnosis.
  • To provide a high level of interpersonal skills and support when breaking bad news. To provide expert communication with patients in ways which empower them to make informed choices providing oral and written information on all aspects of treatment.
  • To act as the patient's advocate in decision making in regard to treatment options, providing support and information as appropriate, at the time of breaking bad news and throughout the pathway.
  • To act as the patients' advocate at the MDT to ensure their wishes are known.
  • To act as a point of contact for Head and Neck cancer patients, and their families/carers
  • To provide specialist nursing intervention to a defined group of patients and work as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To support and communicate information to patients/carers, nurses, and MDT members on the complexities of treatment and aftercare.
  • Attend the Head and Neck Cancer MDT meetings and the oncology operational meeting and deputise for the Head and Neck CNS at other site specific meetings.
  • To become competent in specialist Head and Neck care, clinical advice, and support to nurses, health care professionals, and care agencies to ensure a high quality of individualise patient centred care.

Main duties:

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic nurse to join our existing Head & Neck Care Team. To support the Head & Neck Clinical Nurse Specialists in providing high quality supportive care to patients with cancer at diagnosis and throughout their treatment pathway.

Desired characteristics:

The postholder will need to be a senior nurse who can demonstrate extensive experience in caring for patients with cancer. Must have excellent communication skills and knowledge of the National Cancer Supportive Care agenda.

Qualifications

Essential

  • oRGN with current NMC registration. oUndertake a competency programme, or a willingness to undertake oRelevant related oncology / head and neck training oWilling to study to degree level oCommunication skills training


Desirable

  • oAppropriate degree. oRelevant related post graduation certificate in cancer/palliative care/head and neck.


Experience

Essential

  • oUnderstanding experience of autonomous working. oAbility to set and establish priorities. oExperience in tracheostomy, laryngectomy care. oNursing patients with cancer and palliative care needs. o12 months ENT/Surgical experience.


Desirable

  • oManagement experience ie. ward management. oExperience of teaching/ education. oWorking and supporting Head and Neck cancer patients/ families.


Knowledge

Essential

  • oDemonstrate a basic knowledge base of head and neck cancer. oAwareness of pain and symptom control. oAwareness of psychological issues. oAwareness of current political issues and NHS changes. oAwareness, understanding and application of current evidence based practice. oUnderstanding of the need of confidentiality awareness at all times.


Desirable

  • oDemonstrate having used research in practice. oKnowledge of and participation in audit.
