Service Manager Surgery & Cancer Services Unit - Spinal, PNI , Foot & Ankle & Mutual Aid Band 7

HRS 37.5/week


We are looking for an individual who is highly motivated and enthusiastic about positively impacting changes in healthcare for the benefit of the population.

This is a very exciting role giving the individual the opportunity to work with expert spinal surgical- and operational teams at the RNOH to develop sustainable services for the future.

The manager will manage and co-ordinate the performance led work of the unit, review and manage the unit`s work programme and supporting the development of new services, applying project and programme management skills.

Main duties of the job

The manager will lead on the development of consistent pathways and policies and capacity planning and management including assuring equitable access. The individual will arrange and lead meetings, and represent the unit in service meetings, including external forums with NHSEI and GIRFT.

Provide timely, efficient and effective operational service management support for the operational service assisting the Clinical Director, Lead Clinicians and Operational Leadership to ensure that these services are responsive, innovative and provided to the highest possible clinical and performance standards.

Responsible for on ensuring that all performance/quality targets are met.

The post holder will manage a team of administration staff within the service, however the specifics will be agreed pending successful appointment.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will need a high degree of motivational skill, working closely with colleagues at all levels in the division and organisation, clinical and non-clinical and where appropriate, outside of RNOH. They will need experience of influencing behaviour, in often challenging situations. The post holder must be able to encourage and enthuse others to implement change at many levels. This is a complex but highly rewarding role requiring knowledge and experience in the application of service redesign, quality improvement and other transformation techniques, working alongside teams to implement cultural changes to existing ways of working to ensure positive outcomes for services users. The post holder will have a high degree of autonomy and will be expected to balance multiple work streams within the project to deliver sustainable transformation for spinal surgical services at RNOH.

Person Specification



  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience
  • Recognised management qualification or equivalent experience Managing people, Projects, Finance and Access
  • Evidence of continuing education and development
  • Knowledge and understanding of a range of issues across the NHS.
